Conservative pundits and politicians love to portray President Obama as a lawless domestic tyrant who has shredded the Constitution. Hardly a day goes by when Fox News hosts don’t ask if he’s violating the Constitution or insinuate that he’s a Marxist Muslim sent to destroy America as we know it as part of a secret plot by George Soros and shadowy liberal interests. Another favorite paranoid conspiracy story (which is a special favorite of the NRA and gun lobbyists) is that President Obama is a dictator who wants not only to ban all guns, but that he will issue an executive order to send the military and law enforcement door to door throughout the United States to confiscate them.
One of President Obama’s most frequent critics in the United States Senate is Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who has blamed him for everything from the Boston Marathon bombing to Benghazi. Lindsey Graham, who served in the United States Air Force, also really, really, really loves the military – and by that, we mean, he really, really, really loves spending money on the defense budget and not necessarily members of the armed services. Senator Graham also is a big supporter of sending our men and women into any possible conflict we could possibly get involved with and has complained that the size of our military is far too small.
On his campaign website, Lindsey Graham also claims to be an economic conservative and complains about the national debt:
With over $7 trillion added to the national debt under President Obama, Lindsey Graham believes the federal government spends too much, taxes too much, and borrows too much. That’s why in 2012, Graham was ranked by the National Taxpayer Union Foundation as one of the Top Five Senate budget cutters for proposing over $400 billion in spending cuts
Graham supports a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, reforming Social Security and Medicare to save them from bankruptcy, and repealing and replacing Obamacare.

Despite complaining about Obamacare and the government spending too much, Senator Graham always wants more money for the defense budget which is already the largest in the world by far. He’s even opposed the Pentagon’s own cost-cutting measures which are a shift away from years of spending and bloated by fighting two ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s also flirted with running for the Republican nomination in 2016, a move that, as Mother Jones points out, is really an attempt to get a job as Secretary of Defense should a Republican win the White House.
Now, Lindsey Graham has stated that if he was president, he would use the military to keep lawmakers in Washington until they restored the defense budget to a level he deems appropriate:
While visiting the Concord City Republican Committee on March 7th at the “Politics and Pies” forum, the 59-year-old Senator asserted that American ground troops would be necessary to defeat ISIS. In addition, he advocated for the reversal of defense spending cuts and, as President of the United States, Graham would restrict the movement of lawmakers until those cuts are reversed.
In a chilling statement, Graham said he would not allow Congress to leave D.C. until his demands are met, declaring he would use United States military force to keep them there.
“…and here is the first thing I would do if I were President of the United States, I wouldn’t let Congress leave town until we fix this. I would literally use the military to keep them in if I had to.” (Source)
Granted, BenSwann.com is a libertarian website, but the audio speaks for itself. Senator Lindsey Graham will certainly try to backtrack on his words, but as one of the most hawkish members of the Senate, there’s no denying his statement which is backed up by his track record on defense spending. His proposed actions go far beyond President Obama’s executive orders he and other Republicans have complained about, and headlong into true dictatorship. Senator Lindsey Graham has finally exposed himself for what he really is – a petty tyrant that represents the military industrial complex, not the people of South Carolina.
