At this point, whether or not the government shuts down is anybody’s guess. I’d say it’s unlikely because Donald Trump’s just trying to set the stage for some sort of dramatic moment where he can act like he’s “swooping in” to save the day, try to make himself look good, and prevent our government from closing.
As I’ve said before, always remember, Trump only cares about himself and protecting his image, facts and reality be damned. Every. Single. Time.
That said, it’s still entirely possible we could see our government close for the first time in over four years.
While there are many aspects to this circus I’ve found both comical and infuriating, none come close to the idea being pushed by Trump and the GOP that, if the government shuts down, Democrats are the ones to blame.
Leave it to Republicans to control the House, Senate, and White House — yet blame Democrats for a possible government shutdown.
Keep in mind that the only reason we’re even looking at a possible shutdown is because Republicans have taken DACA and CHIP funding hostage, hoping to use them as leverage against Democrats. Make no mistake about it, this possible crisis has been completely manufactured by the Republican party.
Trump didn’t have to end DACA, he chose to do that. Meanwhile, Republicans could easily pass a “clean” bill funding CHIP right now if they wanted to. It’s Trump and the GOP who decided that they’d use these two issues to play politics with the lives of millions of Americans (the majority of whom are children) impacted by both programs.
It’s ridiculous how Trump and the GOP continue to blame Democrats for the ineptitude of this Congress and administration when Republicans control all of our government.
While the House passed a plan, the real issue remains in the Senate where even several Republicans have said they aren’t planning to vote for a short-term funding measure.
This reminds me of a few months ago when Trump failed to repeal Obamacare because even several Senate Republicans didn’t support the terrible plan they were trying to force through, only for this “president” to blame Democrats. Apparently in Trump’s twisted “logic,” when a bill is so awful that even several members of your own party won’t back it, that means Democrats are supposed to come in and help you screw over millions of people by ripping away their health insurance and protections for pre-existing conditions.
If the government shuts down, just like it did in 1995 and 2013, Republicans will be the only ones to blame.
Only this time, Republicans are taking the ludicrous stance that, even as their party controls the House, Senate, and White House, somehow if the government shuts down it’s the fault of the Democratic Party.
Once again, the party that claims it’s all about “personal responsibility” is doing its best to take absolutely none for their actions. It’s their “president” who ended DACA and it’s the Congress controlled by their party that won’t pass a “clean” bill funding CHIP. This is nothing but a manufactured crisis by the Republican Party trying to play politics with the lives of millions of people, while attempting to blame Democrats for their own incompetence.
