After Rand Paul Got Caught Plagiarizing Speeches, His Website Starts Removing Speech Transcripts

rand_paulI’m sure by now many of you have heard about the story where Rand Paul was caught blatantly plagiarizing the Wikipedia page of the science fiction movie Gattaca during a speech where he claimed abortion, mixed with science, might lead to eugenics.

That revelation then lead to deeper investigations of his speeches, which produced evidence showing numerous instances where the Kentucky Senator had plagiarized.  One revelation found in this investigation into a few of Paul’s speeches was that during his “State of the Union” response, the senator had clearly taken text directly from an Associated Press story and passed it off as his own information.

Well, it seems Senator Paul and his people have decided to make it more difficult to prove that he’s plagiarized his speeches by going through his website and removing transcripts to speeches he’s posted.

Talk about shady.

Sure, they’re leaving the videos of these speeches up.  But they’re going back and removing the transcripts so it makes it much more difficult to identify plagiarism that might exist in some of those he’s given in the past.

Can you imagine if President Obama did something like this?  Imagine if Obama was caught plagiarizing a speech, which then produced investigations that showed numerous other times where his speeches were taken from sources he did not credit, then suddenly transcripts of his speeches began vanishing from his website.

Ironically, it would be people like Senator Paul, and the Paul-bots who blindly cheer him on, who would be leading the charge against President Obama in what I’m sure they would call something like his “cover up of lies and deceit.”

Yet, when it comes to their right-wing hero Rand Paul, I’m sure somehow this overwhelming amount of evidence that shows he’s plagiarized numerous speeches in the past is “no big deal.”

The plagiarism itself is bad enough, but to see evidence where those in charge of Rand Paul’s website seem to have orders to sift through his speeches and remove transcripts from some of them tells a bigger story.  To me it seems that they were aware this was going on, got caught, and are now going back to make exposing his plagiarism more difficult for anyone trying to investigate this behavior.

Again, something that if President Obama was caught doing, would send people like Rand Paul and his supporters into a frenzy of conspiracy theory rhetoric and attacks.

But what bothers me most isn’t really the plagiarism, though it’s a much bigger deal than I think most people are aware of (trust me, work in this business and have your hard work or ideas ripped off — it’s really annoying).  What bothers me most is the fact that there seems to be a conscious effort on his website to cover up evidence that might expose further plagiarism.

He got caught, still refuses to own up to what he did, and now he’s trying to cover up any further investigation into it.

Say what you want about President Obama and the “Obamacare” website, but at least the president has owned up and taken responsibility for the issues it’s having.

Yet Senator Paul appears to be making a calculated effort to try to cover up his past plagiarism by making it harder for people to scan transcripts of his speeches for similarities with other sources.  Or as Rand Paul supporters would say if Obama was the one caught doing this, “A corrupt government conspiracy to cover up the truth!”

Zero integrity. Close the book on this fool.

Paul is corrupt in more ways than one. I could never trust a thing he says and this doesn’t shock me at all. He is a total azzclown!

As a teacher I’ve given F’s for a plagiarized paper. Colleges can kick out people for plagiarism. Something should happen to Rand Paul.

    • Bob Papadazzio

Why? Nothing happens to Obama for it, and he’s been doing it since college.

      • Ellen H.

I researched your assertion and found one case of it, which were a couple of sentences he used in a speech. He admitted he should have given credit and regrets he didn’t. So, let’s see all your cases. I won’t accept not reputable sources as proof.

      • Bob Papadazzio

Yea, clearly Obama’s plagiarism was an isolated incident…

      • Ellen H.

The John Edwards quote I’ve heard from countless politicians before Edwards said it. The other quotes are the ones he admitted to and said he should have given credit. The bigger issue with Paul is the fact his website started removing the transcripts, and he denied doing it. Obama admitted it.

  • He says his poodle hairdo is his real hair. One day I’ll pull that poodle thing off his head.

  • regressive rightwing trash

all is fair in love and war ( politics is war) and as long as they ( scumbag regressive white trash tea party Christian crybabies) do NOT have any LEGAL price to pay for LYING,,,,,,they WILL continue– and I do hope they enjoy the upcoming 8 yrs of the second Clinton — courtesy of the American electorate

Funny thing, the shortcomings with the obamacare is the only mistake he’s owning up to. Time to get off your high horse and realize both idiots have more up their sleeve than a dirty elbow.

Mr Ric, This was an article about Paul Rand and plagiarism. The conservative tactic of ‘changing the subject’ will not work here!!!!!

How does this work? In 2010, Rachel Maddow was accused of plagiarizing Michael Rodgers who wrote a blog in his blog “Open Salon” a post “Rachel Maddow Plagiarized My Blog”.

      • mandate

Being accused of plagiarizing happens all the time. Can you show me the exact wording that resulted in the accusation. I bet not. On the other hand Mr Paul admitted what he did but just was not bright enough to know that it was plagiarism. How does that work for you????

      • strayaway

I accept your challenge. Not only is Rachel also a plagiarist; she is a serial plagiarist and hypocrite.

“The plagiarism in question involves a comparison Rodgers made between the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 with the often-forgot about 1979 Ixtoc I oil spill in the same area. The liberal blogger noted that “the oil industry hasn’t advanced their methods of plugging holes in the ocean floor or cleaning up their messes.”

Rodgers then became perturbed upon seeing his own unique angle being copied on Maddow’s program: “I’m sitting there Wednesday evening watching MSNBC and there is Rachel Maddow…TELLING THE SAME DAMN STORY!!”

Rodgers complained, “she stole my scoop of a lifetime and now it’s plastered all over MSNBC with Rachel getting all the credit. Granted, the segment she did Wednesday night covered more ground and was more professional than my little feature, but then she has more resources at her disposal than I do.”-

Another blogger made a similar allegation against Maddow just this month. In a post titled “A Remarkable Coincidence,” an anonymous poster writes:

A friend of mine emailed me a link to a short video from the Rachel Maddow Show. He had just read my previous piece on the debt crisis, entitled “Nantucket Sleigh Ride.” Several days after I posted, Maddow and Co. had created a little skit about the debt crisis using an obscure metaphor from the days of whaling: the so-called “Nantucket Sleigh Ride.”

The original Rodger’s piece, containing more detail, is titled “Rachel Maddow Plagiarized my Blog” and can be found at openDOTsalonDOTblog

Wasn’t a Nantucket Sleigh Ride when the whale was harpooned in such a way that it could swim off and pull the small boat behind it?

  • James Shultis

To me, the worst of it was that when Paul was confronted with his plagiarism, his denial made it quite clear that he didn’t know what the word meant.

  • meatwad_SSuppet

    From his mothers side

  • Gary Menten

Rand Paul is a wee, stupid man. It’s no secret that the plans to run for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016, which means that in order to win, he has to Publicly “out-stupid” Ted Cruz. That’s a tall order for anyone, even Paul. But he’s sure doing his best.

  • kidpsych

So just use the “Wayback Machine” (internet archive) to access the speeches.

  • VIsidore

Plagiarism is serious. College students can get expelled for doing it. Cautioning against is in the syllabus. Teabaggers don’t care because they are too stupid to know this.

  • Stiles

It is not right that he plagiarized his speeches, but I would take that over the outright lies from Obama.

    • BobFromDistrict9

The day you can show outright lies by Obama you might have something to say.

  • Englishprof

The rule is: One word is anybody’s. Two words in succession taken from any source must be put in quotation marks and given credit. Paraphrasing must also be credited in oral or written discourse (E.g. “According to so and so, [paraphrased passage]”). No excuses. Rand Paul doesn’t even seem to understand what constitutes plagiarism. I’m sure his college English teachers at Baylor U. are mortified to be associated with him.

  • BobFromDistrict9

Are you going to tell me nobody has copies of those speeches? Set up a page of Paul Plagiarism. Have the speeches with the plagiarism clearly marked.

We can all share it on Facebook.
