By default, anything organized by the loons on the far far right (and I’m talking here about people who make Boehner and Scalia look like chill dudes) is going to be a massive mess. The talk is big, I mean big. If it was a building they’d have to worry about it getting hit by the moon. Though the reality is, shall we say, underwhelming.
Operation: American Spring (named such because I assume that the creativity of the creator, Harry Riley, amounts to stealing the name of a previous foreign event and changing it slightly) is so hilariously overblown and overconfident that it cannot be overstated. This is a clown car of an event. The absurd claims are numerous. I’d rather not link the site since I don’t want to give them more traffic than I have to, and I expect it will disappear in electronic shame shortly. But since I’ll be quoting from it, it’s located here.
To start with, the “Mission”: “Restoration of Constitutional government, rule of law, freedom, liberty of the people, by the people, for the people from despotic and tyrannical federal leadership”. Meaningless word salad. The Constitution is alive and well and the government is well within it. Rule of law? The rule of law says that treason and sedition are illegal, bub, so you’re SOL there. Freedom… you know, every time I ask one of these kind of yahoos what freedoms they’ve lost, they can never actually name anything. “Liberty of the people, by the people, for the people from despotic and tyrannical federal leadership?” That’s GOVERNMENT of the people, by the people, for the people and we have that already, thanks. Try reading the seminal documents of the nation sometime. The despotism and tyranny bit fall into the same “umm, well, I dunno” undefinability every time it’s challenged; utter hyperbole.
Moving down their list, they have a series of assumptions, all completely bonkers. Straight out the gate, they fall flat on their face: “Millions of Americans will participate.” Umm, no. Let’s be realistic: if the GOP and Fox can’t manage to get the numbers they expect and desire for their events, with their not-completely-batcrap-crazy message and a national platform, you’ll be lucky if 50 people show. Next: “American veterans and patriots are energized to end the tyranny, lawlessness, and shredding of the US Constitution.” Again, no. Actual patriots love their country; they don’t go around calling for its overthrow. Veterans actually served the government you claim they’re going to show up to oust, as patriots themselves defending the country from terrorists like the organizers of this event. “Government is not the target, it is sound; corrupt and criminal leadership must be replaced.” Bullcrap. This is nothing but an “I don’t like that I don’t get my way” tantrum. The elected leadership is part of the government; if you don’t like who got elected, work harder next time.
Here’s a doozy of a section: Concept of Operations.
“Phase 1 – Field millions, as many as ten million, patriots who will assemble in a peaceful, non-violent, physically unarmed display of unswerving loyalty to the US Constitution and against the incumbent government leadership in Washington D.C., with the mission to replace with law abiding leadership.” See above about the lunacy of numbers, as well as the actual definition of patriots. Also, non-violent, unarmed? Do they really expect the type of prepper, miltia, anti-government loon they can expect to attract to show up unarmed? It’s like expecting a fox to just sleep peacefully in the hen house.
“Phase 2 – One million or more of the assembled 10 million must be prepared to stay in D.C. as long as it takes to see Obama, Biden, Reid, McConnell, Boehner, Pelosi, and Attorney General Holder removed from office.” Buddy, you will be lucky if you can keep the attention of these kinds of chuckleheads for a day, much less weeks or months. Of course, not word one about how the removal of the rightfully elected and appointed people listed will be accomplished, if the process is to be non-violent as the organizers claim.
“Consistent with the US Constitution, as required, the U.S. Congress will take appropriate action, execute appropriate legislation, deal with vacancies, or U.S. States will appoint replacements for positions vacated consistent with established constitutional requirements.” Wow, inspired!… except there’s nothing in the Constitution about ANY OF THAT. Pure fantasy, born of too much time watching Fox News and reading the Drudge Report. The appropriate action for Congress to take would be to have whomever shows up to this mess committed to a mental hospital as a danger to themselves.
“Phase 3 – Those with the principles of a West, Cruz, Dr. Ben Carson, Lee, DeMint, Paul, Gov Walker, Sessions, Gowdy, Jordan, should comprise a tribunal and assume positions of authority to convene investigations, recommend appropriate charges against politicians and government employees to the new U.S. Attorney General appointed by the new President.” And here is where the truth starts coming out. They’re not in this to restore constitutional government; they’re in it to install a new government made up of the type of people they WISH were in charge. It’s nothing more than sour grapes that their fascist vision of America can’t come true the legal way, so they’re going to try to make it happen by force. These people truly have no idea how America works. There is nothing in the Constitution about “tribunals” or “assumptions of authority”, so that just proves that their moralizing about Constitutional government is nothing more than the facade over their real intent.
So, the grand plan is to have a horde of people too right-wing to call themselves Republicans show up in DC and just… sit there? This will be at best embarrassing for the organizers, and at worst it will make the capitol unpleasant for a day or two. This whole thing would be treasonous and criminal, if it wasn’t doomed to utter and complete failure.
