Atheist Bill Maher Slams Catholic Rick Santorum: ‘I Like the Pope Better Than You Do!’ (Video)

bill-maher-santorumWhile I make no secret of the fact that I am a Christian, I also don’t hide the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of organized religion. In organized religion I see nothing but humans taking faith and twisting it for their own desires.

If you ask me, faith is meant to be a personal thing that people voluntarily come to. I’ve never understood how people believe faith is something that’s supposed to be forced on others. In fact, that defeats the whole point of faith to begin with. Forcing someone to follow your beliefs against their will is quite literally force – not faith.

That being said, I am a fairly big fan of Pope Francis. Not that I’m saying he’s perfect, but in my lifetime he’s easily the most “Christ-like” pope I’ve ever seen. I would have never thought one day I’d see a pope who preached acceptance, tolerance, taking care of the planet and went out of their way to help some of the neediest among us. You know, like a Christian is supposed to.

What a novel concept, right? The leader of the Catholic Church actually following the teachings of the man on which the faith is based.

Naturally, this hasn’t exactly sat well with Republicans. Being that they only like to use Christianity to manipulate people into voting against their own interests, they haven’t been overly thrilled with a pope who’s spoken out in favor of combating climate change and against unregulated capitalism. Heck, in a speech a while back Pope Francis essentially called trickle-down economics a big scam.

This pope has been so progressive even devout atheist Bill Maher has sung his praises from time to time. If you know anything about Maher, you know that he’s not exactly someone who speaks highly of religion – let alone religious leaders.

Well, on Friday night he had GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum as one of his guests and absolutely slammed him on recent comments the former Pennsylvania senator has made against the pope’s stance on climate change.

“I’m not a Catholic, I’m an atheist, but I like the pope better than you do,” Maher said.

“So much of religion is arrogance masquerading as humility  – he’s the vigor of Christ, your God, shouldn’t you have the humility to say ‘Well, if the pope thinks climate change is a problem maybe I should?’,” he continued.

Santorum then went on to basically suggest that the reason Pope Francis spoke out in favor of combating climate change was to appeal to more people.

You really have to love these people like Santorum who say “let’s leave the science to the scientists.” While they frequently say such things, they continue to speak out against the reality of climate changeeven though they’re not scientists! Maher called out Santorum on this point last night as well.

This whole back and forth reminded me of something I posted on Twitter a few weeks ago:

How outdated is the GOP? The Catholic Church is now more progressive on science and social issues than they are.

It’s sadly true. You know your party has gone completely bonkers when the leader of the largest Christian religion in the world (with a history of not exactly being overly progressive) is now more up with modern times than you are. While the rest of the world progresses – even the Catholic Church – the Republican party continues to try to drag this country back to the 1950’s.

It really is a strange time in this country when an atheist like Bill Maher is defending the pope against the supposedly devout Catholic Rick Santorum.
