The anti-Planned Parenthood army is having a field day with the discredited video that alleges the group sells fetal tissues left over from abortion procedures. Conservative lawmakers have quickly pounced on this James O’Keefe-style hit piece as an opportunity to score points with the far right by calling for investigations, and restating their promises to anti-Planned Parenthood activists to defund the organization once and for all.
One of the favorite stories these people (my own family included) like to tell is that Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, was a racist who hated black people. To hear them tell it, she founded the organization solely to wipe out the African-American population – or to make all women into raging feminist man-haters set free from the traditional values of being perpetually barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. The charge of racism is unfounded, but it is one that has been repeated over and over again by Republican politicians, and now Ben Carson is the latest to do so while also criticizing President Obama for saying “God bless you” to Planned Parenthood employees back in 2013.
Via Right Wing Watch:
“You wonder if he actually knows the history of Planned Parenthood and Margaret Sanger, who was trying to eliminate black people,” he said. “That was the whole purpose of it.”
His allegation rests on a debunked claim that has circulated through right-wing circles for years that Sanger was using birth control to exterminate the African American community.
Carson also promised that he would use Hillary Clinton’s praise for Sanger and her relationship with Saul Alinsky against her in the presidential race, claiming that he would “educate the people” that the campaign is really about a divide between “American and anti-American things.” This led him to attack the Affordable Care Act, which he said was illegitimately “shoved down our throat” … even though it became a law just as any other law does through an act of Congress.
The GOP candidate later returned to the Planned Parenthood video.
“If we can’t defund Planned Parenthood after this, we’re lost, we’re just in the wilderness forever,” he said. “This is the smoking gun. We’ve always known the kind of organization this and how anti-life they are.” (Source)
Even though the people who want to destroy Planned Parenthood claim the organization is nothing more than an abortion mill, abortion procedures only make up only 3% of the services they provide. In fact, you could argue that Planned Parenthood does more to prevent abortions than the anti-choice activists who are trying to shut them down, and even prosecute women for having a miscarriage.
Ben Carson isn’t a stranger to making ridiculous statements, including blaming police shootings on feminism, or stating that Obamacare is the worst thing since slavery. The majority of the Republican field is desperate to gain any advantage they can in such a crowded pack, and they’ll say or do anything necessary in order to get the votes and funding they need so badly to get past Iowa’s caucuses. Planned Parenthood is a favorite target of the evangelical Christian and anti-choice wing of the GOP that I often refer to as “Duck Dynasty Republicans,” which is why Ben Carson is happily throwing red meat statements like this out there.
Does he believe in these absurd stories about Planned Parenthood, race and Margaret Sanger? I am assuming based on his many years in the medical field and otherwise normal behavior prior to politics that he doesn’t. The people he is trying to woo to his presidential campaign do, and that’s all that matters to him.
