Proving that Republicans will literally try to blame everything on liberals, there’s actually a sizable chunk of Republicans who’ve blamed Donald Trump’s rise within the party on the left and even President Obama. While that sounds absurd (because it is), they’re actually somewhat serious about this.
Their “logic” (if you want to call it that), is that liberals and President Obama are so terrible we’ve “forced” Republican voters to support someone like Trump in a desperate attempt to stop the oppressive left from destroying the country.
If that doesn’t make any sense, it shouldn’t – because it doesn’t.
Well, on Friday night, Bill Maher tore into those on the right who’ve been trying to blame Trump’s success on the left.
Maher began by mocking a list of several articles that have attributed Trump’s popularity to “smug” liberals who care about things like facts, equality and, of course, political correctness.
“That is their thesis. That Trump voters are perfectly nice if left alone, like raccoons,” Maher said. “They just want to eat garbage and crap in your hot tub.”
He then went after any of these Republicans who are “offended” by liberals who like to point out factual information about things like gay rights, racism, global warming and evolution.
“Here’s the thing: you guys were wrong about all that,” Maher quipped. “Really – check the climate science. Check the dashboard camera on the police car. Check your pastor’s Internet history.”
Finally he wrapped up his “New Rules” segment by summarizing how totally and completely asinine it is for anyone to blame Donald Trump’s popularity among Republicans on liberals.
“I’ve ridiculed them [liberals] for everything from offensive Halloween costumes to Islamophobia; from the self-esteem movement to college campuses forgetting what free speech is,” Maher stated. “But none of that justifies embracing a dangerous buffoon simply because his lack of political correctness is cathartic. Trump is your problem. But somehow the ‘party of personal responsibility’ doesn’t want to take responsibility for this one.”
Bill Maher is usually pretty spot-on with his “New Rules” breakdowns and last night was no exception. While I know a lot of these articles being published on the Internet blaming liberals for Trump are mostly just clickbait written to elicit a response, I’ve still seen quite a few Republicans legitimately try to make this argument. This is something they’ve been doing since nearly the moment Trump started to climb up the GOP presidential ladder.
But the truth is, Republicans are doing everything they can to act like they’re going to back Trump while also trying to keep their distance from him. It’s rather interesting watching this balancing act where they’re trying to claim he has valid points, while also seemingly trying to admonish some of the vile things he says as “not representative of the party’s values.”
For them to blame Donald Trump’s success within the party on liberals isn’t just laughable – it’s flat-out insane.
