It never ceases to amaze me how so many conservatives still try to claim that Fox News is, as their catchphrase says, “fair and balanced.” Fox News is well known all over the world for being a right-wing “news” organization. Yet millions of conservatives will swear up and down that they believe American’s most watched conservative entertainment channel has nothing but unbiased, factual news reporting.
As most of us know, Bill O’Reilly is one of the biggest blowhards on Fox. While he’s not quite as partisan as someone like Sean Hannity or Eric Bolling, he’s still pretty far right; though every once in a while he’ll criticize a Republican to present the illusion that he’s not partisan.
Well, during a debate with fellow Fox News personality Bernie Goldberg, O’Reilly disputed the assertion that Fox has a tendency to be kinder toward Republicans (just as the liberal media is with Democrats). He claimed that Fox News isn’t conservative, it just gives conservatives a voice they don’t have with “the liberal media.”
“Liberal news organizations are going to play down liberal screw-ups,” Goldberg said, “but Fox News is gonna play down conservative screw-ups.”
O’Reilly responded by saying he often brings fair, independent-minded people on his show.
“This program is not all of Fox News,” Goldberg quipped.
Then O’Reilly tried to claim that most of the hosts on Fox News, such as Megyn Kelly and Greta Van Susteren, aren’t at all partisan.
“So Fox isn’t the conservative network, is that what you’re trying to tell us?,” Goldberg asked.
“I’ve never bought that Fox is the conservative network,” O’Reilly responded. “I buy that Fox gives traditional conservatives a voice that they don’t have on the other networks.”
It was at this point that I literally began laughing out loud. For O’Reilly to sit there on national television honestly trying to claim that most of the hosts on Fox News aren’t partisan is an absolute joke. I’ve watched countless hours of Fox News over the years and I honestly can’t think of more than once or twice when someone (who wasn’t one of their token liberals) said something positive about President Obama. Hell, many of the personalities on that network have based large parts of their careers these last few years on bashing anything and everything this president has done.
But O’Reilly’s attitude isn’t anything I haven’t seen numerous times. Conservatives have been so brainwashed by the conservative media into believing that they’re the only “beacon for truth and fairness” that many Republican voters really believe that Fox News is truly “fair and balanced.”
Meanwhile, for those of us who aren’t delusional, we all recognize Fox News for exactly what it is – nothing but a network that’s almost solely dedicated to pushing whatever right-wing propaganda the Republican party wants pushed.
