Saturday night’s New Hampshire Republican presidential debate was about what you would expect it to be. Seven candidates standing on a stage saying how awful everything Democrats support is, spouting off their usual scripted talking points and not actually answering most of the direct questions they’re asked. As usual, it was filled with absurd lies based on a reality that only seems to exist inside the minds of Republicans.
Though something did happen Saturday evening that left me momentarily speechless. During an anti-abortion rant, Marco Rubio said one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard anyone say. He quite literally claimed that Hillary Clinton is so “extreme” on abortion rights that she supports a woman’s right to have an abortion… on the due date of the baby.
No, I’m not joking. Here’s what he said:
“Here’s what I found outrageous. There have been five Democratic debates. The media has not asked them a single question on abortion, and on abortion, the Democrats are extremists. Why doesn’t the media ask Hillary Clinton why she believes that all abortions should be legal, even on the due date of that unborn child.”
First, Hillary Clinton’s stance on late-term abortions is known and hasn’t changed over the years:
“I have said many times that I can support a ban on late-term abortions, including partial-birth abortions, so long as the health and life of the mother is protected.” (Source)
It’s a rational stance to take. As someone who is pro-choice, but not overly a fan of abortion, I put the life of the mother above all else. In my personal opinion, the mother’s life is priority number one.
But that’s not what Rubio said. What he literally said was that Hillary Clinton supports abortions on the due date.
Now, some of you might be thinking, “Wait, that doesn’t make any sense. Why would someone want an abortion on the due date?”
See, for rational people who aren’t spouting off gibberish for cheap applause points, an “abortion on the baby’s due date” is actually called a delivery.
Just think about this for a moment. Rubio is such a blithering idiot that he basically suggested Clinton supports murdering a fully formed baby on the day the mother is expected to give birth, for no other reason than the mother deciding at the last second that she didn’t want the baby.
While there’s plenty of debate to be had over whether or not a fetus within its first few weeks is a “baby,” I don’t know of any sane person who would claim that after eight or nine months, it still isn’t a human baby.
When he said this comment, I had to pause for a moment to think about what I had just heard. If you dislike Hillary Clinton, that’s fine. But to accuse her of being someone who has no problem with an “abortion” on a baby’s due date? That’s despicable. Rubio was either too ignorant to realize what he had said (a very real possibility) or he’s so desperate to pander to anti-abortion radicals that he’ll say anything he can hoping that these folks are naive enough to actually believe him.
Either way, it was easily one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard anyone say – possibly ever. Which is a scary thought considering Marco Rubio has essentially been crowned the “chosen one” by the Republican party to hopefully be the party’s nominee in November.
Then again, sadly, with this crop of presidential candidates, Rubio really might be the “best” they have. Talk about desperation.
