Remember following the first Republican presidential debate when Carly Fiorina was a rising star within the party who might possibly challenge Donald Trump atop the polls? Well, that ‘surge” lasted all of about two weeks after her biggest moment of her campaign, her Planned Parenthood lie, was shredded by fact-checkers and practically everyone in the media. Since then her campaign has sunk back down to the bottom rung of the presidential ladder.
Though the truth of the matter is, Fiorina is a horrible candidate. Her really lone saving grace is that she performs fairly well in debates. She’s well-spoken, confident and always seems incredibly prepared. But aside from how she presents herself during these debates, there’s nothing about her that suggests she’s even remotely qualified to be our nation’s president. Not unless you count nearly running HP into the ground.
Well on Friday, Fiorina basically killed her own campaign after sending out one of the dumbest tweets I’ve ever seen:
Love my alma mater, but rooting for a Hawkeyes win today. #RoseBowl
— Carly Fiorina (@CarlyFiorina) January 1, 2016
Now I know some of you are probably thinking that this tweet is rather harmless, right? Well, yes and no.
While “sports pandering” is not exactly something new in politics, to root against where you went to school in the process of doing so is… just sad. Not only is what she said completely disingenuous, but does she really think the voters of Iowa are so stupid that they would suddenly rush to support her because she was rooting for the Hawkeyes? Granted, Republican voters aren’t always the sharpest tools in the shed, but even most conservatives don’t like being patronized. This is a woman who’s running for the most powerful office in the world, yet she thinks “leadership skills” include rooting against your own alma mater all for the sake of pandering for a few votes?
If I were a Republican voter in Iowa I would have respected her much more had she wished Iowa well, but said she couldn’t root against the place she went to school. At least that would have seemed honest and shown that she’s willing to make a “tough decision.” This tweet just made her look weak and desperate – not exactly qualities that people are looking for in a president.
Then to top it all off, Iowa got absolutely annihilated by Stanford 45-16, spawning the Twitter hashtag #CarlyCurse. So, not only did she sacrifice her pride all for the slight possibility of getting a few votes in Iowa, but she’s now being mocked publicly for “cursing” the Hawkeyes.
If you can’t be true to yourself, or your school roots, you really do deserve a little bad karma. Then again, when you’re polling around 2 percent – like Carly Fiorina currently is in Iowa – you really can’t go much lower.
Ultimately what this showed is that Fiorina doesn’t have the leadership skills (or courage) that it takes to be President of the United States.
