Over the last few weeks, much has been made over North Carolina passing a law that’s been deemed one of the most anti-LGBT pieces of legislation in the country. While there are several aspects to this bigoted law, the main focus centered around a provision pertaining to transgender people and what bathrooms they can use. Most people who aren’t raging bigots and homophobes know that this law is nothing more than Republicans continuing their assault on the LGBT community.
Well, during an interview Sunday morning, Fox News’ Chris Wallace made North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory look like an absolute idiot as he tried to defend the passage of this law:
Wallace: How many cases have you had in North Carolina in the last year where people have been convicted of using transgender protections to commit crimes in bathrooms?
McCrory: This wasn’t a problem! That’s the point I’m making. This is the Democratic Party and the left-wing of the Democratic Party.
Wallace: Have there been any cases of this?
McCrory: Not that I’m aware of.
Wallace: Have there been any cases in the last five years? Why not just then let it go if there’s not a case of transgender people going in and molesting little girls?
McCrory: When you go into a restroom or your wife goes into a restroom you assume the only other people going into that restroom or shower facility is going to be a person of the same gender. That’s been an expectation of privacy that all of us have had for years.
Wallace: If there’s no problem then why pass the law in the first place?
McCrory: There can be a problem. Because the liberal Democrats are the ones pushing for bathroom laws.
Hear that, folks? It’s us pesky liberals and progressives who care about treating people with respect and dignity who are the ones forcing Republicans to pass these anti-LGBT laws. Bigoted laws that, as McCrory flat-out admitted, are aimed at preventing a problem – that does not exist.
Chris Wallace is not an overly animated individual, but you could tell he was a little annoyed with McCrory and the b.s. answers he was giving, which I absolutely enjoyed. Even though nearly everything I watch on Fox News turns my stomach, I do actually enjoy and respect Wallace for being one of the rare people on America’s most watched conservative entertainment network who’ll call out Republicans from time to time.
But for McCrory to not only admit that he can’t cite a single instance where a transgender people exploited a bathroom to commit some sort of deviant sexual act, then for him to try to blame all of this on liberals who support equality, only shows how absolutely ridiculous this whole thing is.
Republicans can try to spin these anti-LGBT laws however they like, which they’re clearly trying to do. However, when you get right down to it, this is nothing more than the next step in the continued conservative war against the LGBT community. A war that, despite their best efforts to hold onto their outdated ignorance, they’re losing badly.
