I guess I missed that part where Jesus Christ said to love and accept one another – just as long as we adhere to societal stereotypes about what is acceptable for boys and what is acceptable for girls. But apparently administrators at Timberlake Christian School know where to find that passage because they aggressively went after an 8-year-old girl because she dressed too much like a boy and enjoyed doing things boys liked instead of what girls should like. Or at least what girls should act like according to them.
After 8-year-old Sunnie Kahle cut off her long hair to donate to a child who had cancer, the style stuck with her and she’s had it ever since. She also admits to enjoying things that many boys enjoy, like rough housing, pocket knifes and collecting coins.
Well, her tomboy appearance and behavior was apparently too much for this pathetic school to take. And while the school didn’t directly kick the child out of their school, it’s clear by their comments they were trying to force the girl out of their doors.
Take for instance the letter principal Becky Bowman sent home with Sunnie that said, “We believe that unless Sunnie and her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education.”
In other words, if she’s not going to adhere to the “norms” that the school supports, she shouldn’t be going to the school. Yes, this is an 8-year-old girl who donated her hair to a child with cancer being treated this way by a supposed “Christian” school. A student who had perfect behavior and a 4.0 grade point average. The school went after this poor girl because she didn’t fit into their “traditional values.”
It’s absolutely disgusting. It’s crap like this that makes people flee the Christian faith in droves. These people claim they’re doing their best to expand Christianity, but their small-mindedness is destroying it.
But Sunnie is better off ridding herself of that school anyway. She sounds like an amazing girl who doesn’t need to be in a place filled with such hate, ignorance and judgement. It’s just a shame that this pathetic school, supposedly run by adults, felt so threatened by this 8-year-old girl.
