Sometimes I run across such ridiculousness from the conservative media that I should be outraged, but all I can do is laugh. That’s exactly what happened when I saw the news that the CBO came out with a report which actually showed the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) will cost less than previous estimates.
Nothing much else changed about their future estimates. They still show deficits decreasing in the short term with a possibility of increasing around 2017 if spending isn’t reigned in and revenue isn’t increased. Nothing that they haven’t reported before.
The news in this report was that Obamacare is actually costing less than they had previously thought.
But that’s not what you saw if you went to Breitbart.com or The Heritage Foundation’s website. What they did was completely ignore the fact that the CBO lowered the cost estimates of Obamacare. Instead, they pushed the “story” that has been known for years now that the CBO is projecting deficit increases for a few years starting in 2017.
By the way, the CBO estimates that deficits will increase not only because we need to make more spending cuts, but with the assumption that Republicans will refuse to raise taxes. Another fact that these conservative sites always fail to mention.
The headline over at The Heritage Foundation read, “CBO Report Estimates 2014 Deficit at Half a Trillion Dollars: Why The Real Deficit Number is Actually Higher.” Over at Breitbart.com the headline was, “CBO ISSUES DIRE DEBT WARNING OF ‘FISCAL CRISIS” (yes, in all caps).
Again, neither of these conservative sites mention even once that the estimates for the Affordable Care Act were revised lower.
Fox News actually did cover the report though they downplayed the significance, titling their piece, “CBO Slightly Lowers U.S. Deficit Estimates As Health Subsidies Fall.” If you read the article, it’s essentially one paragraph that mentions (though downplays) the lowered cost estimates while spending the rest of the time doing its best to paint a negative picture of Obamacare.
While none of this is surprising, it just made me laugh at how this report essentially reported the same stuff it has before, with the key new part being a lowering of estimates for the costs of Obamacare, and these conservative sites went out of their way to report on anything and everything but that.
