Immigration is one topic that’s almost guaranteed to spark a fairly intense debate. And while I definitely have my views on how we should handle both legal and illegal immigration, the issue itself is not as simple as some try to make it out to be. Many people on the left believe that we should just have open borders, accepting anyone and everyone who wants to come here. Meanwhile, many on the right think that we should build some giant wall along the U.S./Mexico border while hunting down and deporting over 12 million undocumented immigrants.
But like with most things in life, the real solutions are usually found somewhere in the middle.
Needless to say, from the far-right there’s a plethora of anti-immigration rhetoric that’s constantly being pushed by the Republican party. While they claim it’s all about “abiding by our laws” and “protecting our borders,” it’s clear that a lot of these anti-immigrant talking points are fueled by racism.
Well, if you’ve been watching The Daily Show this past week, you know that Jon Stewart has been broadcasting from Austin, Texas. And during his time in the Lone Star State he’s taken up addressing some of the issues that seem important to Texans. Last night he decided to cover the always popular topic in the state of what to do about those darn Mexican immigrants.
The big issue of this segment was a claim by a local law enforcement official who said that illegal immigrants are coming over here and getting free computers, cars and all sorts of government goodies to which, as he claims, only illegal immigrants are privy.
Following this claim, they showed a clip mocking the “horrors” of what Mexican immigrants want to do to the United States – starring none other than Danny Trejo.
While I suggest everyone take a few moments to watch this hilarious skit, I will say that it brilliantly hammers the over the top fear mongering often pushed by many of these anti-immigrant individuals by showing Trejo doing “terrifying” things such as:
- Bringing home takeout from Boston Market
- Hitting ground balls to neighborhood kids
- Making salsa
With a tagline to the video: Latinos: Watch out, because they’re not leaving until they get what they came for – a life as boring as yours.
The fact that it stars Danny Trejo makes it even more hilarious.
And while it’s clearly a “fluff” video meant to make people laugh rather than actually address immigration with any real substance, it does do a great job at mocking the ridiculousness often pushed by some of these anti-immigrant individuals.
