Darwin Awards Candidate: Man Shoots Self in Head Trying to Teach Girlfriend Gun Safety

Not the guy, but could bear a striking resemblance to him.

Not the guy, but could bear a striking resemblance to him.

This is another one of those stories where after reading it, I unfortunately laughed a little.  It’s unfortunate because someone died and I feel bad laughing at the fact that a life was lost.

That being said, it’s really hard not to laugh at this story due to the sheer idiocy of it.

A Michigan man trying to teach his girlfriend gun safety accidentally killed himself when one of the guns he was using went off.

Which is tragic, no doubt – but not completely.

See, this wasn’t a horrific accident as a man nobly tried to teach his girlfriend proper safety when handling a gun.  It wasn’t like she accidentally fired a loaded weapon killing him.  A bullet didn’t accidentally ricochet off something, killing the gentleman.

Nope.  None of that.

What this individual did was put three different guns to his head, pulling the trigger each time.  The first two guns didn’t discharge.  However, the third one did – killing the unnamed man.

His girlfriend reported that he had been drinking throughout the day prior to his attempts to teach her “gun safety.”

I really want to feel bad.  And I do on some level because a son, brother, possible father, friend, boyfriend died.  I feel bad for those who cared for this guy and the loss they’ll have to deal with going forward.

But at the same time, I can’t directly feel bad for him.

What kind of an idiot puts not one, but three guns to their head trying to teach “gun safety?”  Then what kind of idiot pulls the trigger three different times?

Now I get that alcohol might have been involved, but come on.  Millions of gun owners drink, and many of those who drink get drunk.  What they don’t do is drink, then try to teach “gun safety” to someone by putting three different guns to their head – pulling the trigger each time.

Besides, whatever happened to checking to make sure your guns weren’t loaded and the chamber didn’t have a round loaded inside?   It seems someone desperately needed to teach this guy something about gun safety.

First lesson, you don’t put a loaded gun to your head and pull the trigger because there’s a good chance you won’t survive.

Well, I guess the gun did teach him that lesson about gun safety.  Unfortunately for him, his friends and family, he had to learn the hard way.

To me, this is darwinism at work.  Evolution of the species.  Survival of the fittest.

And while it’s sad that someone lost their life, there’s only one person at fault for this death – the guy who decided the best way to teach “gun safety” was to put a gun to his head and pull the trigger.

If someone had to die, I’m glad this idiot killed himself instead of someone else.

  • Pat

I can only hope that he did not have children.

    • Bob

Just because he would have taught them to be just as stupid as he was!

    • Bonnie

I was just thinking the same thing.

      • Robyn Kern

I am pretty sure after witnessing this, there is a really good chance she does not have any guns in the house!

    • Jay

Actually either he or she did have kids. In the first report I read it stated that 3 kids were in the house but did not witness the display of profound stupidity! I just wonder if the girlfriend is feeling fully educated.

  • TheOneWhoNocks

And South Carolina has a law now that it’s legal to carry concealed firearms into bars. Brilliant!

    • Bob Dobbs

We have had that in Arizona for years now,.. before it was cool.

      • James

have you been to SC bars in the summer with those rednecks ? Fights over women in those bars are a normal event

      • Brian David

Almost as common as fights over farm animals!

      • David Kelly

They have to beat you away from them?

      • bubba2001

Yeah but they fight, they don’t shoot each other.
Guess just WHICH neighborhoods shoot each other?

      • Just proving that Arizona is the hipster of batshit insanity.

      • DeoVindiceTriHexa

Sorry, Ellhyyzzzabethth. That award is a three-way tie between California, Massachusetts and New York.

      • Phil

I am disgusted with my state on many issues, and this is one however I feel a need for clarification here.

        (1) Licensed businesses (liquor license that is) can bar weapons, though they must use very specific signs of a specified size and wording, unlike other establishments that can simply post a “No weapons” or similar sign.

        (2) You can carry into a licensed premises, but you are NOT allowed to consume any alcohol (legally) while you are armed. Go figure that one.

    • Gordo2772

      @Jordan
You make it sound like gun owners now are going to flock to bars to get drunk while lawfully being armed. Let it be VERY clear, any person that carries into a bar CANNOT drink alcohol.

      • guest

For further clarification – not all states with “bar carry” laws prohibit drinking while carrying. AND how would the bar tender know that this person is carrying if it is concealed?? Just because it’s illegal doesn’t mean it won’t happen… Seems to me that in this article it proves that guns DO kill people – sometimes the person holding the gun cuz I”m sure he didn’t mean for that to happen.

      • bubba2001

Fine, don’t patronize the bars that don’t want guns in their places. DO patronize the ones that do!
That law was made because people couldn’t carry at restaurants would have to go out to their cars at night in dark parking lots.

  • polliwogg

I just hope this happened before he had a chance to reproduce.

  • polliwogg

To paraphrase another old saying-“Life is short. It’s shorter if you’re stupid”.

    • Robyn Kern

      Yes it is!!

  • MadeUpName

The NRA should practice the exact same safety techniques.

  • Sunny Ray

“the ways of the lord are inscrutable” well I guess this one is lol

  • Bob Stec

I’m sorry but I don’t feel bad at all. The family of this man might feel bad but ultimatitly they and socity at large will be better off without this “genius” roaming the streets.

    • DeoVindiceTriHexa

And obviously, Bob Stec, your DNA is the cream of the crop.

  • buttercatz99

They are just toys to most people. You know. Bang. Bang.

  • Matt Pantages

    Darwin meets karma again..

    • bubba2001

Sure does and I’m waiting for that 70 I.Q. DOPE in the White House to meet his. lol

  • MidWestGal

I want to see Ted Nugent do the same thing, on live tv. Still waiting for tn to leave the USA.

    • Bonnie

      YES!

    • polliwogg

      On Pay Per View!

    • DeoVindiceTriHexa

      I’d prefer Diane Feinstein.

  • Kim Wilson-Young

I’ll feel bad after i change my pants, I pissed them after laughing so hard.

  • markdouglas

Tragic story, the #1 rule of a firearm is to always assume it’s loaded. So of course, never point it at anyone, including yourself, unless your intent is to kill them or yourself. This is rule #1 for a reason

  • Darren White

“Now I get that alcohol might have been involved, but come on.”

Unnecessary sentence. Of course alcohol was a factor. That’s part of what makes this Darwin award material.

  • robingee

If you’re gonna be dumb, you better be tough.

  • jWd

Doesn’t seem like any great loss.. one less gun toting low life

  • Kelly Payne

MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD HAVE TAUGHT HIM GUN SAFETY FIRST.

  • NED

One should have to pass an IQ test to buy a gun, this guy proves it.

  • Sunshine

my brother in law calls this “Culling the Herd”. No one this stupid should be allowed to reproduce.

    • guest

But for some UNKNOWN reason the NRA does believe they should have a gun – as many as they want. Something tells me if he didn’t have a gun – he wouldn’t be dead. So there are still some holes in the NRA’s theory.

      • Phil

I see what you did there.

  • B.A.

    I
laughed at this because I read it in the 1980s, an awesome URBAN
LEGEND! The photo alone is a sad joke of redneck+Hippy+rebel+racist+bad
Dresser+cardboard sign is on storage shed instead of facing somewhere
thieves can see before jumping fence!!!! Great idea, but you could have
made it look much more legitimate with a little effort!!!

    • donnaswanrundell

You’re wrong about this being an urban legend. It happened not far from where I live here in Michigan. Independence Township, Michigan…and the Oakland County Sheriff Dept. are the ones investigating the death.

  • Jack McCord

Love the photo! One of the earliest pix of Ted Nugent!

    • bubba2001

      No, that’s an Obama voter.

  • CitizenKochkane

“those who can do, those who can’t teach gun safety…”

  • Blondy Van Weirden

I’ll just hazard a guess…this guy voted for Romney and Ryan…huh?

  • James

But did she learn anything ? A very expensive lesson for her not to have.

  • just me

the newest member of the “stupid death” cloud,…he is sitting next to the “fork in the toaster” guy….humans,…for all of our brilliance we can be just dumb as a box of rocks.

  • Sad American

really sad how joyful all of you are for a person’s death – stupid way to die or not.
has the political blindness and us versus them mentality really influenced America so much that when a life is lost you actually laugh as an author and commenters had to change because they were peeing their pants they laughed so hard.
stupid is as stupid does, but the hate has to stop as the only ones with a voice seem to be those that have so much hatred versus others that compassion is lost.
the left and right have ideas that work, but until people realize that by working together for the benefit of all and not the attitude ‘I am right and you are wrong’ and the stubbornness that comes with it – will America be able to be great again.
politicians and media are the problem and those that always read their own opinion in other’s work will not have an open mind to have a proper dialog.

  • huh

He had a girlfriend? How dumb is she?

  • Mark Strange

It’s not survival of the fittest in the sense of good health, strong muscles, extreme intellect, but the survival of the most adaptable, the most able to Fit in to the ever changing environment. But that being said, Intelligence more then anything else helps you adapt. The more you know the more you can see coming and help you make the necessary adjustments to ensure survival.

  • Brian David

“First lesson, you don’t put a loaded gun to your head and pull the trigger because there’s a good chance you won’t survive.”

NO, the first lesson is you treat every gun as if it is loaded at all times!

    • Phil

May I suggest “The first lesson is don’t put ANY gun to your head, loaded or unloaded.” That will cover every situation; and is really the smart rule. This guy is far from the first to not live to realize there was ‘one in the chamber’…
Or maybe the first lesson is “Alcohol does not help you do anything well with firearms.”

  • Heretic2011

Someone that stupid had to be an Obama voter, so no great loss.

  • CHARLES

This was not a case of gun safety being taught, You don’t point a loaded or empty gun at no one, unless you intend to use it, because your life is in danger. Its always the empty gun that goes off and takes a life. From the information given here, this guy had to much to drink, or enough to drink to point three guns at his head and pull the trigger. There is no gun safety being taught here at all. So unless someone is trying to be funny about a man loosing his life, by saying he was teaching gun safety, you are sick.

  • James Cox

He does qualify for a Darwin Award. He has met all the requirements: chief of which is removing oneself from the gene pool, unintentionally.

  • Jim Esposito

This is why you don’t drink and shoot. I was always surprised to see some people I have known actually return from hunting trips or target shooting practices. They would ask me if I would like to go and I always said “not with you thank you”. These are the same guys that go deep sea fishing in a 10ft row boat. Morons, all of them.

  • Artman

Well what he was trying to prove, poorly and stupidly, was that he always had his guns unloaded. Forgetting one of the rules of gun safety, “always treat a gun as if its loaded.”

  • bubba2001

    HA!
Those Obama voters are a laugh a minute!
