I don’t hide the fact that I’m a President Obama supporter. While I haven’t agreed with everything that he’s done, it’s hard for me not to get behind a president who’s created over 10 million jobs; authorized the successful mission to kill Osama bin Ladin; gotten the unemployment rate below 6%; presided over the best year for job growth since the 90’s; has set a record for consecutive streak of private-sector job growth in U.S. history; came out for marriage equality and reduced our deficits by $1 trillion.
And he’s done all of that in less than 6 years.
Though apparently this election year Democrats were too cowardly to get behind all of that.
But there is one thing I wish President Obama would do more of these next two years – fight back.
I don’t really care what anyone thinks of the president, there’s one thing that’s undeniable: He knows how to give a speech and get his supporters fired up – when he puts actual effort into it.
And every time he decides to stand up and fight back against Republican propaganda, those who support him – and even some of those on the fence about it – come out in force and applaud his actions. I’m willing to bet if I went back and studied the times during his presidency where there’s been some national story and he’s taken Republicans head on, his approval ratings go up.
In fact, I don’t even need to research that. When it came down to the debt ceiling, raising taxes on the rich and the government shutdown (times where Obama was forceful and aggressive) the American people overwhelmingly blamed Republicans and sided with him.
But far too often he sat back, trying to play the nice guy. He’s let Republicans control the message for far too long. Even after this year’s elections Republicans kind of mocked Democrats by “thanking” them for keeping Obama on the sideline.
Even they know he’s a weapon Democrats foolishly ran away from.
So all I want these next two years, when we all know nothing is going to get done, is for Obama to end his presidency fighting. Stop holding back and stop letting Republicans bully him around in the media. We cannot let Republicans ruin all the progress we’ve made these last 5+ years. And if we let them, that’s exactly what they’ll do.
We desperately need President Obama to be the forceful opposition to every piece of right-wing nonsense Republicans will be trying to sell to the American people. When they lie, he needs to be the fact-checker calling out those lies. When they try to mislead the American people, he needs to be the one out there telling the truth they are desperately trying to hide.
But what he can’t do is waste these last two years letting Republicans control the message while he sits back trying to be the nice guy “unifier” that they were never going to let him be.
I want him to be angry, forceful, upfront and borderline pissed off. I want him to take the fight to Republicans. Because as we saw this year, if he doesn’t do it, the Democratic Party sure as heck isn’t going to.
So Mr. President, please spend these next two years dedicating yourself to relentlessly hammering Republicans on their endless stream of lies, propaganda and campaigns of misinformation. Stop trying to be someone they’ll never let you be and be the leader the Democratic Party desperately needs right now. Because at the very least, if we’re not going to get anything done these next two years, what we can do is dedicate ourselves to making sure that Republican propaganda doesn’t go unopposed.
And that starts with the president. So I sincerely hope these next two years we all see a much angrier, forceful and determined President Obama.
It’s not just the Democratic Party that needs him to lead with force, but this country needs him to prevent Republicans from doing their best to destroy everything we’ve accomplished in rebuilding this nation from the epic economic collapse that was the result of the last time the GOP controlled the White House.
