Dear Republicans: Whether You Like It or Not, You’re All Huge Fans of Socialism

I find it slightly comical that Republicans (and even some Democrats) scoff at the idea of socialism in any form, especially considering this country has been partially driven by socialism for decades. In fact, most Americans absolutely love socialism.

If you doubt me, go ask any state that’s been decimated by some sort of natural/man-made disaster how helpful FEMA and other funding from the federal government was in recovering from destruction that’s usually catastrophic. Private donations are always great, but they usually fall far short of the billions needed to recover from massive hurricanes, powerful tornadoes, historic flooding, or other unexpected disasters.

So that means, yes, Republicans, when I say most Americans are fans of socialism, I’m talking about you as well. Whether or not conservatives want to admit it, most of them really like socialism.

In fact, let me take a moment to address those Republicans who will undoubtedly freak out at the sheer mention of the word “socialism.”

Oh, I know, you all don’t agree with me that you’re fans of socialism, right? You’re not a socialist — you’re a “freedom-loving capitalist who wouldn’t dare support evil socialism!”

So, have you ever:

  • Driven on public roads?
  • Attended public schools?
  • Eaten food that didn’t make you sick thanks to safety standards?
  • Deposited money into a bank because you knew even in the event of a robbery your funds are insured?
  • Visited a public library?
  • Collected Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid?
  • Called for police, fire or medical assistance?
  • Received mail from the United States Postal Service?
  • Bragged about and saluted our military?
  • Taken out a student loan or grant?
  • Had your garbage collected by city services?
  • Used any form of public transportation?

Because if you’ve utilized anything I just listed (as well as numerous other services in this country), and you’re glad they existed when you needed them — you’re supporting socialism. Everything I just listed above is, in one way or another, paid for and/or subsidized by the government via taxes.

Aka, socialism.

Do you know how our military became the most powerful human-made killing machine in Earth’s 4 billion year history? Because we socialized the hell out of it.

Yes, any conservative whose livelihood and medical care is largely based on Social Security and Medicare is quite literally living on socialism. In fact, without that socialism, many of you might be homeless or dead.

Take a look at the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare.

After years of Republicans promising that if their voters gave them control of the House, Senate, and White House they’d “repeal and replace Obamacare on Day 1” — the health care law still exists.

Why?

Well, that’s easy. You see, despite all the GOP’s propaganda, the socialist aspects of the law are simply too popular for Republicans to do a full repeal of Obamacare. They know that if they were to repeal the law in its entirety, millions of conservatives would instantly realize just how much they benefit from the law. Especially the socialist aspects of Obamacare, such as the subsidies many use to help pay their premiums and Medicaid expansion.

The truth is, this nation is based upon a form of socialist capitalism. Our nation was stronger economically 50+ years ago when we were more socialist than we are today. Back when taxes were higher, unions were stronger, education was better and income inequality wasn’t really a huge issue.

It wasn’t until the b.s. notion of trickle-down economics (which is just an elaborate con predicated on the redistribution of wealth from 98 percent of Americans to the top 2 percent) was thrust upon us that everything started spiraling out of control.

For those Republicans still doubting that you’re all socialists, I have a simple way to prove it: Go find any conservative you know who’s currently receiving Social Security and/or Medicare, then mention you’re in favor of eliminating or cutting their benefits and see how that goes for you.

I’ll go ahead and guess that their reaction won’t be positive. Either way, any true “hater of socialism” wouldn’t accept government benefits — even though millions of “socialism-hating” conservatives do.

So, any time a Republican or member of the conservative media starts to incessantly fear-monger about some sort of “terrifying” socialist policy, just remember one thing: If you’ve benefited from anything I listed in this article, you’re a big fan of socialism.

Even if you refuse to admit it.

Socialism is not forbidden by the Constitution but without amending the Constitution, most government services, not delegated to the federal government, that could be defined as ‘socialist’ including single payer health care plans are functions of state and lesser governments unless they are forbidden by the Constitution. I guess the warped thinking involved here is that if municipalities can collect garbage and municipal garbage collection is socialism then the federal government can do all sorts of socialist things not delegated (allowed) by the Constitution.

War, by the way, is also both a socialist institution and a power delegated almost exclusively to the federal government. Considering Vietnam, Iraq, Libya, and Syria, for starters, its time to reduce this measure of socialism.
