Donald Trump Essentially Seals Republican Nomination after Big Florida Victory

With Florida being a “winner take all” state, there’s no “moral victory” for second place. For Republicans, you either win all 99 delegates or you get nothing. This made the state extremely important for Republicans who had hoped to stop Donald Trump’s reign of terror on the party. Especially considering many had hoped Florida’s own, Sen. Marco Rubio, would have found a way to block Trump from picking up the state’s big delegate haul.

Well, unfortunately for Republicans, Trump has easily won the Sunshine State.

If you’re a Republican who’s praying that Trump isn’t going to become your party’s nominee, this is going to be a very bad night for you. While there are still many states to go, Trump winning Florida all but assures that either he’ll win the nomination outright by getting enough delegates or they’re going to have to try to sabotage his campaign by pushing the nomination process all the way to the convention.

Either way, this is an absolute disaster for anyone within the GOP who was hoping for a miracle.

Though this win by Trump is also a massive blow for Rubio. It’s bad enough that his campaign has turned into a joke over the last few weeks, but he just lost in his home state – badly. Forget winning the nomination (that’s not happening), this is a giant blow to his entire political career. It’s really difficult to build a future campaign (governor of Florida or possibly another presidential run) when you get crushed in your home state.

Say what you want about Ted Cruz (and there’s plenty to say), but at least he won his home state of Texas. And it’s very likely that John Kasich wins his home state of Ohio.

But with this big win for Donald Trump, it really is time that the GOP figures out what it wants to do. They’re either going to have to find some way to unite around him or push this all the way to the convention. Though either move might ultimately lead to the end of the Republican party as we know it.
