How ridiculous has Donald Trump become? Well, Ann Coulter (you know – this woman) has recently called him “mental” and expressed her exhaustion with constantly having to defend asinine things he’s said or done. When an individual who could be her own “one-woman hate group” is even tired of having to defend your seemingly endless stream of absurd statements, you know things are getting pretty bad.
Well, Trump defenders, get ready to get to work because the guy you all want to be our next president has done it again. Only this time, during an interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, he said women who have abortions should be punished.
“You’re about to be chief executive of the United States. Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no?,” Matthews asked.
“The answer is there has to be some form of punishment,” Trump responded.
Though when Matthews asked how severe the punishments should be, Trump said he wasn’t sure.
Let’s really think about what we’re talking about here. Say Republicans get their way and pass a ban on abortions – all abortions – as some within the GOP want to see happen. That means the moment a woman gets pregnant, she loses all control over her body. She instantly becomes nothing more than an incubator for a fetus – forfeiting her own rights as an American. Especially those rights that stipulate freedom of religion which state that no person in this country should have another person’s religion forced upon them.
Now, because a bunch of religious fanatics think their beliefs should be the final say, these folks now seem to believe it is within their right to force their views on women.
If a woman decides that she can’t possibly go through with having the baby, seeking out some “back-ally method of abortion” since Republicans have now theoretically banned abortion nationally, she can then be punished for seeking to have control over her own body.
But what if a woman decides to try to “force abortion” by drinking heavily? Using drugs? Taking any combination of legal pills that might terminate the pregnancy? Would Trump (and Republicans who agree with him) then seek out criminal charges? Even going further, if a woman happens to have a miscarriage are we then going to order a criminal investigation into manslaughter or murder? Or are we just going to make all pregnant women adhere to strict laws that prohibit them from doing anything that might harm a fetus since, you know, they now no longer have control over their own bodies?
What happens if a woman doesn’t even realize she’s pregnant, then does something that triggers a miscarriage. Do you then charge her with a crime?
The list of questions that need to be answered about these pushes to “ban abortion” is seemingly endless.
But I guess if you’re Trump and you feel a woman has purposely done something to force an abortion (good luck proving that) you feel she should be criminally punished.
Again, this is the overwhelming frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination who just said this.
The worst part about it is, this is a very real possibility. With 3-4 spots on the Supreme Court potentially up for grabs this November, if a Republican candidate wins the White House, it’s very likely that we’re headed toward a day in this country where abortion is illegal and women can be punished for trying to have one.
Which is why, for months, I’ve been saying we must make sure our next president is either Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. Because if we don’t support the eventual Democratic nominee, the nightmare that will befall this country might be something from which we will never be able to recover.
*Update: Trump has already backtracked on his comments (shocker) and now says doctors would be punished, not the women.
