Remember a few months ago when there was a bit of a “bromance” going on between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz? Back then, the two leading GOP presidential candidates seemed to be going out of each other’s way to avoid saying anything negative about one another. It was rather strange considering Trump had been ripping into several of the other presidential candidates, while Cruz has essentially built his entire political career on trying to vilify others.
Yet, there these two men were, mired in a presidential race that had been ugly for months, attacking nearly everyone else but each other. In fact, the two men had even heaped praises on one another.
“I like him. He likes me. He’s backed me 100%,” Trump said back in September. “Ted Cruz was out there and he really backed me very strongly and I always respected that.”
Meanwhile Cruz had called himself a “big fan” of Trump just a few weeks before that.
My how times have changed. Now these two are locked in one of the nastiest presidential races in modern history.
Forget “politics as usual,” the GOP presidential race has become political reality TV. Then again, when you have a reality TV star as your leading presidential candidate, that really shouldn’t come as a surprise.
When you get one candidate accusing the other of planting a National Enquirer story about several extramarital affairs, you know things have gone completely off the rails.
However, the question I have to ask is: Is anyone really surprised?
Let’s be honest, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz are very much the same type of person. They’re pathological liars who’ve based their campaigns on scripted talking points, pandering to fear and blatantly lying nearly every time they open their mouths.
For fact checkers, these two must be a nightmare. There have been numerous situations where Trump will tell a lie about Cruz, only to have Cruz use his own lie to respond to Trump… only for Trump to then come up with another lie to respond to that. When I’ve watched these two go at it during the debates, it’s impossible for me to say “who got who” during one of their many exchanges because they’re both so blatantly dishonest. You have to be a fool to believe anything either one of them actually says.
But the truth is, what we’re seeing now was inevitable. Because like I said, the two men, while different on some levels, are still very much cut from the same cloth. Both are pretty much deranged, pathological con artists who only care about themselves and their own egos. Which is why the moment Trump felt pressure from Cruz’s growing polling numbers, and Cruz finally saw “blood in the water,” all hell eventually broke loose.
This circus we’re seeing play out on a very public stage is the perfect depiction of what the Republican party has turned into. Two fanatical, pathological liars, who the party itself can’t even stand, battling one another to see who can con the most American voters by pandering to fear, hate and ignorance.
