Trump’s Embarrassing Gaffe on ‘Obamacare’ Leaves Two Important Questions on the Table

At this point, it’s “breaking news” if Donald Trump doesn’t say or do something that embarrasses himself and his entire campaign. Often before the dust has settled on one situation where Trump made an absolute fool out of himself, he’s already done something else.

Well, the big news on Tuesday was a speech he gave in Florida where he took several shots at the Affordable Care Act (aka “Obamacare”), only to seemingly prove that he doesn’t actually know what the law is.

“I can say that all of my employees are having a tremendous problem with Obamacare,” Trump said. “What they’re going through with their health care is horrible because of Obamacare, so we’ll repeal it and replace it.”

Just a couple of problems with that statement.

First, he was speaking at his Doral resort where the property’s general manager confirmed to CNN that “99 percent” of the employees have health insurance through the hotel.

So, then what did Trump mean when he said that “all of” his employees are having a “tremendous problem with Obamacare”?

Well, obviously, he was just making that up — like he does the vast majority of the things he says.

Trump also went on to claim that the reported 22-25% rate hike announced by the government was all a lie and that premiums were really going up “60, 70 or even 80%.” Of course, Trump provided absolutely no evidence to back up that claim. Then again, when does Trump ever need facts to support something he says? At this point, he clearly knows his sheep will believe practically anything and everything he says.

After all, these are people who seem proud about the fact that they’ve cemented their place in one of the most shameful parts of American history by supporting his candidacy.

Though a couple of things stuck out to me about Trump’s comments.

1. Is Donald Trump, this self-proclaimed brilliant businessman, not aware of the fact that his own hotel offered health care?

Ignoring the fact that he clearly lied about his employees having “tremendous problems with Obamacare” (more on that in just a moment), does he not understand that businesses typically provide health insurance for their employees? I’m not here to self-proclaim myself a business genius or anything, but it’s been fairly commonplace among most companies for which I’ve worked that if you reached a certain threshold of average hours worked per week, that you usually qualify for some sort of health benefits.

2. Does Donald Trump even know what Obamacare is?

Despite what many Republicans may claim, the ACA is not government-run health care. Even following the passage of “Obamacare,” most non-elderly Americans get health care through their employers. Not only that, but the rate hikes predicted for the marketplace plans have nothing to do with health plans people purchase through their employers.

Based upon what Trump said, he seems to think that “Obamacare” is now all health care plans — even those provided by his own businesses.

In other words, he’s been attacking a law for years that he apparently doesn’t know a damn thing about.

As most people who know facts about the law are well aware of, the Affordable Care Act created a marketplace that people could then use to purchase their own plans, with many Americans receiving large tax credits to lower the overall costs.

The marketplace does not apply to people who can get health care through other means… such as their employer.

If you really look at what Trump said, he seemed to believe that “Obamacare” is some form of universal health care law that forced everyone onto its plans — which isn’t remotely true. Granted it’s a law that set certain requirements and guidelines with which all health care plans had to comply, but the marketplace (which is what the recent controversy over rate hikes is linked to) has nothing to do with health coverage people get through programs like Medicare or their employer.

If you ask me, these are two highly alarming things that further prove how incompetent Donald Trump really is. Not that we really needed much more proof of that fact.

Not only did this self-proclaimed business genius apparently not know that his own hotel offered employees health insurance, but he didn’t even seem to know what “Obamacare,” a law he’s spent years bashing, actually was.

It’s a true testament to how far the GOP has fallen from the “party of Lincoln” that this moron is now the face of their party.
