I have no idea why CNN continues to allow Jeffrey Lord on air.
I’d describe Lord as a more sane, coherent version of Kellyanne Conway. By that I mean he’s a master at avoiding answering direct questions, the “pivot,” and saying asinine things that sound good to people who don’t like to think for themselves — but don’t actually make any damn sense.
Case in point, his most recent controversy where he compared Donald Trump with civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
He made these comments while talking about health care by ridiculously implying that Trump’s apparent attempt to sabotage Obamacare, hoping doing so will drive support to Trumpcare, is similar to King’s tactics of using civil disruptions to bring attention to the fight for civil rights during the 50’s and 60’s.
I’m sure most everyone reading this knows how asinine that comparison is, so I’m not even going to address it.
Though CNN’s Don Lemon most certainly did Thursday night in a segment that was absolutely fantastic. Despite Lord’s usual shtick of trying to avoid answering questions, pivoting back to other people, telling stories from his past, or cherry picking history, Lemon was not letting him get away with any of it. In fact, after apparently having enough of Lord, he abruptly ended the segment.
“You’re not answering the question, Jeffrey,” Lemon said, interrupting another attempt by Lord to not address what he was being asked. “You’re not answering my question in the moment. Don’t take me back to some before the war crap. I want to hear what you’re saying to the co-workers you work with now, Jeffrey. Answer the question now! I don’t want to hear about stuff from 50 goddamn years ago!”
As Lord continued to push the idea that Trump’s tactics are similar to King’s, that’s when Lemon appeared to have had enough.
“Dr. King means something different to the people here than he means to you. He wasn’t a tactic for us,” Lemon stated. “He’s a real person, who helped me to be able to get here and Symone to be able to sit here and for Bakari to be able to sit here. And for you to come on and give some reckless comparison to his work and his legacy.”
“Goodnight,” he added, speaking over Lord. “Goodnight, we’re done. Goodnight, we’re done.”
I’m all about giving credit when credit is due and Lemon absolutely nailed it Thursday night. Too often people on CNN let Lord get away with his drivel, but Lemon wasn’t having it. You could tell he was trying his best to give Lord a chance to admit the comparison was idiotic (though he never admits anything foolish he says is wrong), but once he reached a point where he knew Lord wasn’t going to correct his idiocy, he ended the segment several minutes early.
By all accounts from what I’ve read Lord is a very nice guy. During these exchanges with people who know him personally you can tell many of them are trying to be respectful toward him because they know him and like him on a personal level, but think he’s a babbling idiot “professionally.”
Whatever the case may be, Lord’s one of those people who I don’t feel should be allowed to be on-air. He never admits he’s wrong, rarely says anything negative about Trump, and he often just makes stuff up as he’s going to defend whatever drivel he’s trying to sell. Which is why I give all the credit in the world to Don Lemon for standing up to him Thursday and not letting him get away with such a ridiculous comparison.
