On the Fourth of July, A Look at Some of the Freedoms Southern States and Conservatives Have Opposed

4th-of-july-statue-of-libertyIt’s America’s birthday.  The day when millions of people grill, spend time at the lake, probably drink a little too much and set off some fireworks (with safety in mind, of course).

Well, that’s what I’ll be doing.

And as we all know, when it comes to “patriotism,” conservatives seem to believe that they’re the only true patriots.  You know, because us liberals clearly hate America and our Constitution.

I must make one point very clear, when I say “conservatives,” I mean conservatives.  See, Republicans haven’t always been conservatives.  In fact, it wasn’t until the 1950’s and 60’s when the Republican party decided to embrace the South’s blatant racism, hoping to lure white voters to their side – that’s when the Republican party become the “party of Southern conservatives.”

Because, as we all know, conservatives love to point out that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican.

Which is true, but he wasn’t a conservative.

It’s as if these people willfully ignore the fact that every state that fought with the South during the Civil War was also a state that opposed integration, the Civil Rights Act and now almost every single one of those same states is strongly Republican.

Clearly the party has changed since the days of Abraham Lincoln.

But as we all take a day to celebrate the Fourth of July, I say we take a look at a few of the freedoms Southern conservatives (modern day Republicans) have opposed throughout our nation’s history:

  • Freeing the slaves
  • Allowing women to vote
  • Desegregation
  • Interracial marriage
  • The Civil Rights Act
  • The Voting Rights Act
  • Women’s rights
  • Same-sex marriage

That’s quite the list of ignorance, bigotry and racism.

History shows it hasn’t mattered if it’s 1860, 1960 or 2015, states like Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina – they all opposed every single one of those fights for freedom listed above.

And “shockingly” every single one of those states is strongly Republican – and fought for the Confederacy.

So, on this Fourth of July holiday, if you happen to encounter one of your conservative family members and engage them in some kind of political debate, I suggest you reference this article to showcase just how ignorant conservative ideology has been throughout American history.

Have a great holiday and stay safe!

Sadly, what you failed to comprehend or blatantly ignore is DEMOCRATS were in charge while all of those polices during six of those seven issues you mentioned. Such pitiful lies. Ignoring the true racism of the Democrat party since the KKK was founded by white south Democrats. White southern Democrats fought freeing slaves while northern republicans were the abolitionists. Your revisionist history is quite sad.

    • Avatar

It’s because Democrats changed and publicly denounced KKK back in 1950’s. Today Republicans are embracing them as if they cherished their vote numbers they desperately needed.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

So just admit that the Democratic party was/is full of racists. Just because the party denounced it doesn’t mean it magically disappeared. Some of the most racist people I know consider themselves progressive liberals.

      • thatdernlibral

The ONLY racist people I know are redneck conservatives, but I am from Georgia. My group of friends that are mostly liberal minded people don’t show blatant racism in public as some of the conservatives I know do, what they do in private, I have no clue, but public displays of racism are just not there. Most liberals support the ideology of complete equality, whether it be skin color, gender, sexual orientation, whatever. The fact you come here saying “nu-uh, them dern librals are racist” is just a bad argument…

      • Retrodude

How many liberals/progressives would you spot at any given KKK rally? None. However, you WOULD see countless Republicans, Tea Partiers, and Libertarians. Epic fail dude. Just like your GOP.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Really? How many KKK rallies have you been to lately. How many have you actually witnessed other than the garbage that you hear from the talking heads at MSNBC.

      • Retrodude

Moron. It is common fact that racists ALWAYS vote REPUBLICAN. I have talked to countless racists over the years. Always Republican or Libertarian. Oh and I don’t watch MSNBC.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Your ignorance and delusion knows no bounds. Racism isn’t owned by just one political party. I’ve seen racism on both sides. The point at which you’re so delusional you can’t see the racism within your own party makes me pity you. Open you eyes.

      • Retrodude

Dude- liberals are FOR equality. We aren’t racist, you delusional moron. There is NO racism in today’s Democrat party. If you honestly think Obama and Bill Clinton are racists, then there is no hope for you whatsoever.

      • Stephen Barlow

yeah, but like roaches under a sink, you all seems to congregate in the GOP.

      • Retrodude

I live in southwest MO- a hotbed of racism. I see the signs in yards. I’ve seen Tea Party rallies locally. They DRIP with racism. “Impeach the nigger”. “It’s called the WHITE house for a reason”. “Go back to Kenya”. “No more MONKEY business from Obama”. Do I really need to fucking go on with this crap?

      • Stephen Barlow

NO, but watching you rub his face in his own filth IS amusing. Like a 6 year old who broke his Mom’s lamp, lying HARDER AND HARDER bout it the more you confront him with the TRUTH.

    • RickA

Yes, and those White Southern Democrats were *CONSERVATIVES*. Which is what the author SAID.
That’s not revisionist, that’s just the facts.
You’re right, those who opposed freeing the slaves in the south were Democrats. CONSERVATIVES who were Democrats.

we deny the regressive mantra of religion in politics

        =======================================
the defining characteristic of the white trash regressive is———–

      • PMGKittVonKnox

        You’re doing that for me.

      • Avatar

        You still don’t get it.

      • Cliff Herring

PMG you are WILLFULLY ignoring FACTS..which is a typical conservative response! You just can’t deal with thefact that times and attitudes CHANGE. You are all zo resistant to change, because deep down, you are all cowards! You bluster and whip out your guns, but in the end your argueements make no sense! Go crawl back under your rock and hide, while the rest of us move forward and grow.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

No I’m not ignoring facts. Pickup a history book that isn’t one written by Howard Zinn.

      • DoctorButler

There was a time in the US when “Chinese Apple” was a colloquial term used for pomegranates. It’s far more common to see these fruits sold as “pomegranates” nowadays, but this doesn’t change the fact that they are the same fruit.

Likewise, whether they were called Democrats, or Republicans, the constituents of the Southern US were, and still are mostly conservative, and conservatives values are often at odds with America’s core ideals, as the article illustrates.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Once again I don’t know what dimension you live in, but conservative principals were what the country was founded on. They’ve been demonstrated throughout our history and still exist today. I’m sorry you’re in such denial that you can see that or were mal-educated to see otherwise.

      • gian keys LOVES shemale porn

what exactly are ” conservatives” ( see: regressives) conserving? please be specific

      • PMGKittVonKnox

How is being progressive improving anything? Answer: Liberal Progressivism isn’t not improvement. Don’t confuse the two.

      • gian keys LOVES shemale porn

        wow–
that’s your answer to my question?

        absoluuuuuuuuutely brilliant!

      • DogmaDestroys

Here’s a fun little exercise I’d like to see you try, dumbshit: Go to the next meeting of your nearest chapter of the KKK (I have the feeling you’re well aware of where to find it) and walk in loudly proclaiming that you are a liberal Democrat and how much you love President Obama, etc. But before you do, can I have your car? Because I seriously doubt you’d make it out of there alive. Here’s my point: You can spew all the bullshit you want about how Democrats founded the KK and are the true racist, blah blah blah, but here is the cold, hard truth: Regardless of pasrty affiliation, the KKK was founded by and has ALWAYS been populated by CONSERVATIVES. Your spin, denials, and protestations of this fact are only making you look ridiculous – and kind of pathetic.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

No you’re full of shit. Once again the KKK was founded on White South Democrat males. Lying and saying it was conservatives over and over again won’t change reality. I know that liberals specialize in denial, but this is really starting to become a demonstration of a mental illness on your part.

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

        u are simply amazing

      • ML

PMG, you need a few history lessons.

      • LateNightLarry

Trouble is, the Koch(roach) brothers and their friends are doing their best to rewrite the history books to reflect the (non)reality they want to believe. Hope someone has a bunch of history books from the 40’s and 50’s and 60’s hidden away where the revisionists can’t find them…

      • PMGKittVonKnox

OMG! The boring Koch brothers excuse. Please stop using it, it’s so old.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Funny I was about the say the same thing to you.

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

hey sh*tbag————– let us try again:
shall we look at the records and poverty and health problems in those predominantly repub southern states of TODAY???
        no????
U did faw’ down and go BOOM again,,,,,,,,,didntcha>?

      • ML

Well then you would be wrong twice.

      • PMGKittVonKnox

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

shall we look at the records of the southern states TODAY???
        NO?????………………awwww–
UU faw’ down and go BOOM again?

    • Sarah Fawcett Kangas

PMG you are just showing your ignorance. In history the names Democrats and Republicans will always be there, also conservative and liberal. Many times in history conservatives were democrats and liberal were republicans, so you saying that the Democrat party founded the KKK is accurate you should add that at the time this Democrat party was conservative.

    • DoctorButler

The article mentions the “southern strategy”. Everyone knows about the KKK affiliation, so you’re not “enlightening” any “sheeple” here.

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

he will look at that properly when my pet Argentine TEGU learns to play Vivaldi on the harpsichord

    • Cemetery Girl

Pick up a history book, the political parties basically exchanged views. I won’t deny that their are racist Democrats. It would be like trying to claim the northern states never had any racism either. Racism isn’t just a problem from one set type of people, it is everywhere. There is a tendency that people of conservative views fear what is unlike them, leading to hate. They aren’t the only ones though

    • Stephen Barlow

But since the Democrats took the KKK to court an BANKRUPTED THEM, the REPUBLICANS in places like Tennessee and North Carolina have rekindled the KKK. Look at the ATF map of ‘paramilitary’, white supremicist, sovereign citizen and secessionist organizations. They are aLMOST ALL solely and wholey in RED states with Conservative legislative agendas.

If VOTING is THE ONE KEY THING that makes America free, the WHY is it that ONLY RED states are looking to keep people from voting and making it particularly difficult for NON WHITES to do so.

THERE is what makes YOUR KIND Unamerican and RACIST.

    • HairyEyedWordBombThrower

      *CONSERVATIVES*…you mean…

      • GenKittVonKnox

No, I got it right the first time. Democrats. Read up on your history. BTW “the flip” never happened and it’s a story that cognitive dissonant Democrats tell themselves and other to try and justify the racism within their own party. lol

      • GenKittVonKnox

No Democrats. How can one person be wrong so much. How have you made it this far in life? lol just wow.

  • RickA

Wow, the author even pointed out that Republicans of yesteryear weren’t conservatives, many were liberal, and that Democrats were, all too often conservative, and yet first comment, PMGKittVonKnox, spews the tired old Rush Limbaugh level rebuttal anyway.
    Amazing.

    • PMGKittVonKnox

It has nothing to do with Rush. That’s an really old and childish rebuttal. The issue is the denial and lies of liberals not facing the racism in the Democrat party.

      • Alierias

First it’s the Democratic party, secondly, after the passing of the Civil Rights Bill, the party affiliations of the South did a one-eighty, whereby everyone switch parties over segregation. The actors remained the same, such as Strom Thurman, just the labels changed…

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Once again a childish response on trying to correct “Democrat vs Democratic”. LOL

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

      • Stephen Barlow

      • Ripley Wolfwood

Actually , you can. I think you must have reading comprehension issues because Alierias just said as much above. The party identifications flopped after the Civil rights bill. SO the south was always Conservative, but first identified as Dems and then Repubs.

      • HairyEyedWordBombThrower

Democrats WERE the conservative party back then.

      • HairyEyedWordBombThrower

You mean when Dems were *conservative*?

        It’s changed….

  • John McCready

The more I see of the nonsense coming out of the Southern states, the more I am CONVINCED that they should have REMAINED ‘seceded” from the Union AFTER the slaves were freed in 1865! “Readmitting” them was clearly a collossal mistake!

    • SkippingDog

The mistake was in not completing radical Reconstruction and in giving presidential pardons to the political and military leaders of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis, along with his cabinet and military leaders like Robert E. Lee, should have been arrested and put to trial for their treason. Properly executing its leaders for their crimes would have stopped the “Lost Cause” myth from ever gaining traction.

      • John McCready

The problem was in RE-ADMITTING the Southern states, not in NOT executing their treasonous leaders (Robert E. Lee was posthumously PARDONED in 1975 by President Ford in any case!). Its the REDNECK CULTURE that should have been kept out of the U.S. not those who helped lead the Confederacy!

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Yes, John because letting the country continue to rips itself apart was a good thing wasn’t it? Wow, so much for the “compassionate liberal” label.

      • Stephen Barlow

I think the US would be better off as 6 provinces instead of 50 states.

PA, NJ, NY, CN, RI, NH, VT, ME and MA all have similar histories, economics, heritages, education and poverty issues. A central government for all these people could coordinate the rebuilding of the region.

DE, MD, VA, NC and DC are a homogeneous area and while small, none of their neighbors really share their characteristics.

SC, GA, MS, AL, LA, AR, TN, KY, WV have the same features and problems of ignorant kids who grow up to be equally ignorant adults.

MO, KS, NE, OK, TX are a group beyond description.

MI, OH, IN, IL, IA, WS, MN, ND, SD, MT, WY, ID, UT … share an agricultural heritage.

CO, NM, AZ, CA, OR, WA, NV

AL, HA, and FL are outliers and NOT much like their neighbors at all

Ideally the state lines would vanish and lines drawn according to the census would create functional land masses. BUt the overall improvement of inter regional problem solving will benefit not only the citizens and businesses, but vastly reduce the inertia of legislative processes by streamlining the vastness with which communications and agreements must traverse to become law.

  • Eg Kbbs

Agreed. Although I note the nuance of the Dixiecrats who were called dems then (because they hated the carpetbagging repubs of the north) but otherwise are the itallics conservative

Don’t brandy words, call them what they are: christians.

    • Anonymouse

      Do you mean bandy?

    • DebofAmber

I prefer thumpers, evangelicals, bornagains or talibangelists, myself. Christian means believer in Christ and includes good people.

      • gian keysTOOEASY flat mom

      • PMGKittVonKnox

Nice bigotry. I hope your proud of yourself.

      • Conservative in the Lions Den

Talibangelists…that one made me laugh out loud. 🙂
I’m not a fan of labels, but use one of Christian because it’s easier than explaining what I believe.
But, I digress. This isn’t about “religion” or relationship or talibangelists *snicker * — it’s about people falling under political labels.

      • Dale Paris

How ‘good’ people justify belonging to groups that discriminate is their own business.

    • PMGKittVonKnox

      So now your a bigot?

  • Harry Barr

Obviously, Democrats and Republicans have changed over time. Johnson said flat out he would lose Southern a. Dems over Civil Rights bill and he was correct. However, racism, bigotry and hate are rampant in America. Despite movements and laws things have changed little over the years. Racism and bigotry have become more open and obvious since President Obama was elected. The southern radicals, white-supremacists have a new voice in the tea-baggers and the Fascist Koch brothers and all their money. Rush Limbaugh and FOX nausea continue to stir the evil Kool Aid that so many of the republican base swill by the gallons. Of course, they pander to those who fear everything and have no real self-awareness or identity. Change to them is like a disease with NO cure. Trouble is, they are NOT sure what they are really afraid of. and DO NOT want to know. Dems have their fair share of racist, bigots and some of the Northern states are as racist and bigoted as the Confederate southern states However, what . the Southern states historically oppose has to do with equality for all. The leaders then and now are white guys, white-supremacists backed by perverted laws, force and religion to oppose equality and enforce racism, bigotry and oppression. The sense of “WHITE-ENTILEMENT” is so much more prevalent in the South. The current nationwide state of “HATE” can only last so long before the combined factors “UNLEASHES” the full terror of this HENIOUS abomination. The consequences will be far greater than we can even dare imagine!! Doomsday preppers are fooling themselves because the resulting calamity will overwhelm us all!! Dramatic, perhaps, conspiracy theory, no!! We could prevent this, and some are trying, but most Americans just do NOT CARE enough about anything beyond their little world. When the abomination is unleashed and whatever, if anything, is left then what? The earth will still be, America will exist, at least, theoretically and oh yes, the rest of the world will too, Our society, will be destroyed, probably much of economic system and infrastructure will be in ruins and all those factories, and corp. buildings will be useless. This is coming soon. Maybe tomorrow or next week or maybe next month but, it will happen. Guns, force, terror and all that will be useless. because when you have nothing to lose, there is nothing one can do to make things worse. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!! The souls of our founders, despite their differences, are probably asking each other:”Why did we even bother; we risked everything for what?” The souls of those who died for America are probably amongst us and saying to each other “we died in vain!!” Each of us MUST decide!!

Just to add a little history to the colorful debate — Lincoln didn’t free the slaves because he was against slavery. In actualilty, he was for it. Before the civil war started, the former president supported an amendment to the Constitution called the Corwin Amendment which would keep the federal government from ever being able to interfere with state slavery.

Even after Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln was looking for foreign land to ship the freed slaves.

The disgusting truth (that caused thousands upon thousands of deaths), was that Lincoln wanted money. He wanted to collect the taxes of the southern states that had seceeded.

Don’t take my word for it, here are some of Lincoln’s words:
“My declarations upon this subject of negro slavery may be misrepresented, but can not be misunderstood. I have said that I do not understand the Declaration (of Independence) to mean that all men were created equal in all respects.”

“I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of … making voters or jurors of Negroes nor of qualifying them to hold office nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races, which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality.”

For a Conservative to proudly boast that Lincoln was Republican just means they’re uninformed. Personally, I am a fan of Thomas Paine.
