While it’s not often, there are moments where some actual truth is spoken on Fox News, whether or not the majority of people watching want to hear it.
Such as Saturday when the network’s military analyst, Lt. Col. Ralph Peters (Ret.), slammed “pathetic” gun nuts who continue defending the right for civilians to own weapons designed for war.
“I’m a gun owner. I know guns,” Peters said. “My family’s a gun family. However, these weapons, these AR-15s and similar weapons, are not for sporting purposes. Having those weapons in civilian hands is absolute madness.”
“The purpose of the AR-15 series is to kill and maim people,” he added. “They certainly kill, but beyond that, when they hit you it’s meant to just tear the body apart so the wounded person can’t get up and fight again.”
He went on to call the AR-15 the “weapon of choice for domestic terrorists.”
While I’m sure most of Fox News’ audience didn’t like hearing what Peters had to say, and his words won’t make much of an impact on gun nuts, this isn’t some random political analyst offering his opinion on the AR-15 and what its actual purpose is. This is a legitimate military expert, retired lieutenant colonel, and someone who knows a lot about guns saying that the AR-15, and other firearms like it, are not made for any rational civilian use — they’re made to kill human beings.
I’m glad he made sure to point out that the notion that these weapons are made for “sporting purposes” is ridiculous. Just because some fools out there have used them to hunt doesn’t mean that a weapon designed for warfare is a “hunting weapon.”
Sadly, when all is said and done, I have severe doubts as to whether much is going to come from any of this. Donald Trump and some other Republicans might be out there making bold promises on some very slight new regulations on guns, but I’ll be shocked if we see anything more than a ban on bump stocks actually enacted.
And I’m even skeptical about that happening. Remember, after Las Vegas, there were stories floated that the NRA would be open to backing that ban — and to the shock of absolutely nobody, the story was allowed to fade and nothing was ever done. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress could have taken it upon themselves to do something rather than waiting for the “final word” from the gun lobby, but apparently that’s too much to ask of these people.
If you ask me, all Trump and the GOP are doing right now is buying time until the country’s attention gets focused on something else. They’re doing their best to act as if they actually care about all of this and that they’re going to do something about guns to make our schools and communities safer. However, at the end of the day, they’re not going to do anything. The NRA has too much power, money, and influence within the Republican Party for any member to actually take a strong stand against gun violence without fear of being “primaried” the next time they’re up for re-election.
I genuinely hope I’m wrong.
