For the most part, Fox News has become Donald Trump’s own version of state-run media. Aside from the few credible journalists still working for the network such as Shep Smith and Chris Wallace, most of the shows on Fox News have turned into nothing more than conspiracy-pushing mouthpieces and cheerleaders for Trump.
Sean Hannity, of course, being the most notable.
Over the last year or so, Hannity’s gone from your typical right-wing hack similar to the Limbaughs and Becks of the world, to something more resembling the incoherent conspiratorial rantings of a fraud like Alex Jones.
Such as Wednesday night when he participated in a discussion with fellow Fox News colleague Greg Jarrett who proceeded to accuse Robert Mueller of using the FBI as a “political weapon,” while comparing the agency to the KGB, literally calling it a “shadow government.”
“I think we now know that the Mueller investigation is illegitimate and corrupt,” Jarrett said.
“Mueller has been using the FBI as a political weapon,” he added.
As if that wasn’t enough, then things went completely off the rails.
“The FBI has become America’s secret police,” Jarrett stated. “Secret surveillance, wiretapping, intimidation, harassment and threats. It’s like the old KGB that comes for you in the dark of night, banging through your door.”
“And by the way, this is not a game,” Sean Hannity replied. “This is not hyperbole you’re using here.”
“Ask Paul Manafort,” Jarrett answered. “They came for him, and broke through his front door in the dark of night.”
“It can happen to all of us,” Jarrett warned. “The FBI is a shadow government now.”
Yes, that’s two Fox News employees, one of whom is essentially the face of the network, publicly accusing the FBI of being a KGB-like “shadow government.”
For the record, “no-knock raids,” such as what happened in the case of Manafort, are not exactly uncommon. Typically law enforcement officials aren’t going to let potential criminals know that they’re showing up to collect evidence they’re seeking as part of a criminal investigation. They also had to be issued a search warrant, which they were. Meaning that the evidence they presented to a judge was credible enough to justify such a raid.
This is pure insanity. This is a major cable news network allowing preposterous conspiracies to be legitimized on prime time television by high-profile employees that are accusing the FBI of being some illegal and unconstitutional “shadow government.”
Forget politics for a moment, this sort of rhetoric is dangerous. There are millions of people who hear this insanity who are naive enough to actually believe it. If this keeps up, we could very well see violence break out, led by people who’ve been manipulated and brainwashed by these con artists and frauds who’ve been indoctrinating them with outlandish conspiracies and lies.
It’s one thing to want to defend your political position by cherry-picking data or taking quotes out of context. Unfortunately, that’s just politics. But that’s entirely different from validating the idea that the FBI is being used as a political weapon being run as a “shadow government” aimed at trying to take down a “president.”
