Fox News Hosts Show Off Their Stupidity While Debating Climate Change vs. Terrorism (Video)

fox-news-climate-changeI’ve often said that one of the biggest issues I deal with when I debate conservatives is how short-sighted they are. Most conservatives I deal with are flat-out simple minded. Climate change is a perfect example of this.

As most non-conservatives are well aware of, the word “climate” deals with the overall scope of weather. For example, just because it snows in a place that normally doesn’t get snow doesn’t change the overall climate of that area. When we turn on our local news, the person in charge of delivering the forecast is talking about the weather – not climate.

These aren’t particularly difficult concepts to grasp, yet almost constantly I see conservatives claiming that climate change isn’t real by using weather to “debunk” the “liberal climate lies.” It’s ironic because an increase in freak weather storms (including massive snowstorms) is actually a side effect of climate change.

And what always amuses me about the conservative media, in particularly Fox News, is that they’ll often use snowstorms to push anti-climate change propaganda, yet completely ignore record heat waves and droughts because those don’t support the nonsense they’re trying to push.

Nonsense like I saw on Fox News’ Outnumbered where several hosts found President Obama’s claim that climate change is more of a threat than terrorism completely absurd.

“How many Americans have died from climate change?” host Andrea Tantaros asked.

“Climate change cannot dress up, cross continent borders, look like a neighbor, plan, plot, sit in the cut, and then blow something up,” fellow co-host Harris Faulkner stated.

When their guest, attorney Mark Eiglarsh, pointed out that the president was referring to the fact that climate change impacts more people, they weren’t having that either.

“No, this is all about the president wants to make corporations the enemy,” co-host Melissa Francis said. “That’s much easier. He’s so much more comfortable fighting back against the 1 percent, against companies who are changing the environment rather than against ISIS.”

That prompted Eiglarsh to ask, “Is there anything factually incorrect about the statement that more Americans are impacted by climate change?”

“The science is off,” Tantaros said. “And let me point to a very recent example. That’s the most important thing, the science is off. We just had a snow storm two weeks ago in New York. They told us New York City was going to get blown out. We had to give up our freedom and sit in our house, no cars on the road. Guess what? The models were wrong. So they got the models wrong on the science 24 hours before. How about those models 10, 20 years from now?”

“The models were exactly right for the people in Boston,” Faulkner replied.

This is a perfect example of the ignorance and short-sightedness of so many conservatives. First, because New York City didn’t get hit as hard as forecasters had predicted (and Tantaros is in New York City) in her mind that means the massive snowstorm never happened – even though just a little further north, in areas like Boston, they did get hammered with a ton of snow. But because she didn’t experience it, in her mind that means the whole weather forecast was wrong and unreliable.

But, again, I must emphasize weather forecast. She’s trying to use weather predictions to talk about climate, which shows her ignorance on the subject.

Then when you look at Obama’s comments comparing climate change and terrorism, these Fox News hosts proudly showed off their idiocy. His point wasn’t that terrorism isn’t a threat, but that climate change is a much larger one that stands to impact far more people. If our planet become uninhabitable, we won’t need to worry about terrorism – because humans will no longer exist.

The main reason why so many conservatives seem to lack the ability to understand climate change is because it requires big picture thinking and that’s something many of them simply can’t fathom. We can’t combat climate change after our polar ice caps melt, our oceans rise and temperatures globally are already two or three degrees warmer, because by then it’ll be too late.

But time and time again I see these asinine arguments from conservatives that leave me feeling as if I’m trying to have an adult conversation with someone who has the mind of a child. Because when fools like these Fox News hosts try to use weather to “debunk” climate change, all they’re really doing is proving that they don’t have a clue what the heck they’re talking about.
