Fox News Mostly Ignores Josh Duggar’s Molestation Story, Readers Disgustingly Defend His Actions

josh-duggarAs we all know, Fox News is essentially nothing more than a right-wing propaganda machine. I joked on my Twitter account the other day that I would love to get in contact with the network to ask them to please provide me with at least three links to stories that spoke positively about President Obama or Hillary Clinton. Because I’ll be dead honest, in all the hours I’ve watched the network and followed them on Facebook and Twitter – I can’t recall ever seeing anything positive about either individual. I’m not saying those three stories don’t exist somewhere, I’m just saying I’ve never seen any.

Well, yesterday’s big controversy centered around the disgusting molestation incidents allegedly committed several years ago by 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar, the oldest child of the large Duggar family.

The reality TV “star” essentially confirmed the incidents in a statement posted on Facebook Thursday:

“Twelve years ago, as a young teenager, I acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret.”

Naturally, this story was all over the news yesterday. Literally every time I checked my Facebook or Twitter accounts I saw something related to this situation.

Aside from the vile nature of the incidents themselves and the fact that they involved “celebrities,” the reason this story made so many headlines is because the Duggar family is well-known for their anti-gay advocacy. In fact, Josh Duggar was working for the Family Research Council, a lobbying group that’s largely focused on opposing gay rights (he resigned Thursday), and in the past has said that homosexuals are dangerous to children.

Oh, the irony.

Not only that, but this ridiculous family has said that this whole situation brought them closer to God. No, that’s not satire – they really said that.

With this story being all over the media, I couldn’t help but notice that I hadn’t seen anything about it from Fox News. I watched a good 4-5 hours of Fox throughout the day yesterday, yet I heard nothing. So, thinking perhaps I had just missed their network coverage of this story, I headed on over to their Twitter account to see if they posted anything about it there. Obviously my curiosity was piqued considering the Duggars are well-known anti-gay advocates and Fox News is the leader among the conservative media. So I had a legitimate interest in seeing what slant they would take on all of this.

Well, after scrolling and scrolling down their Twitter feed I finally found where they had mentioned this story – once. Which just so happened to be the exact amount of tweets they sent out regarding the status of the Olsen twins potentially appearing in Fuller House, the Netflix followup to the popular 90’s show Full House.

While I wasn’t exactly shocked, I decided to head on over to see if maybe they had more to say on their Facebook page, only to find the same results – exactly one mention of the Duggar story. But not only that, despite the fact that this story broke early in the day Thursday, they didn’t post the story on their Facebook page until it was nearly midnight on the east coast. You know, when most of the country was already in bed, or no longer paying attention to the news, and online traffic is extremely slow.

But then it got even worse. I decided to check out a couple of the comments on the Fox News post about Duggar only to find people defending him. In fact, the top two “most liked” comments about the story at the time of this publication were both people defending his behavior:

Screen Shot 2015-05-22 at 12.29.43 AM

Amazing, isn’t it? This really shows the true “values” of many of these so-called “Christian” conservatives – defending somebody who allegedly molested some of his sisters and possibly others.

But I found this entire thing absolutely astonishing on several levels. For Fox News to almost completely ignore this story, despite the fact that Duggar is a celebrity and was Executive Director for the very conservative Family Research Council Action (which spends a lot of money lobbying for anti-gay legislation in Washington) shows that they were avoiding placing any sort of emphasis on the most talked about story on Thursday.

But like I said, this isn’t really shocking – it’s what Fox News almost always does. They report on the propaganda they want to push and mostly ignore any facts or stories that expose the nonsense that’s pushed on the network. It’s no wonder Fox News viewers continually rank as some of the most misinformed people in the country.

And if he HAD been a “gay teen,” would these same people have been defending him? I don’t think so!

  • Nancy B

And notice they made no mention of his admission, or his parents’ statement. “. . . after reports surfaced that he allegedly sexually assaulted . . . .”

  • Cliff Gaul Jr.

And if this were Bill Clinton we were talking about, all you liberals would be on the band wagon, defending him. Give me a break…

    • Laura B.

Bill Clinton is not now and never was a child molester.Since YOU seem to enjoy the oldest Duggar kids sexuality perhaps YOU are one?

      • Cliff Gaul Jr.

Now how could we possibly know, that Bill isn’t? We CERTAINLY couldn’t take his word for it….

      • markmac123

This story is NOT about Clinton. This story is about you right wing assholes defending a child molester. Thanks for helping prove the point.

      • Paul

So let me get this straight… To get the attention off of Duggar, you want to make an assumption that someone else is a molester with no proof, or even accusations? Is that correct?

      • Pipercat

You would be correct sir! Red herring and potatoes in a light cream sauce!

      • Guest40

By that reasoning (?) we don’t know if Duggar is actually possessed by Aliens and Clinton didn’t assist him while riding on a Unicorn. Your Conservatism forced you to say something stupid, my Friend. It’s not your fault, you’re part of a cult. But at least own it and move on.

      • Sean Jones

Well, we don’t know that you aren’t a child molester, and we certainly wouldn’t take your word for it.

      • Nate Holt

Just.. stop. Hand over the shovel and go home now.

      • felipe63

Cliff how do we know YOU aren’t a child molester? I certainly wouldn’t take your word for it….

        see how that works?

      • Laura B.

Frankly, if Clinton had been one I am pretty sure the GOP would have dug that up by now. After all, that is what they do, dig up bones.

      • Tressie Johnson

Do not go anywhere near children you sick fuck.

      • lindylou

I wasn’t aware that there were auditions for Glen Beck’s replacement.

      • PRIME79

Id leave my kids with the Clintons ANYTIME over the Duggars.

      • OMGface

Your antenae are dead. Fix them.

      • Pith_n_Vinegar

        Got evidence?

    • Betty Eyer

Despite the best efforts of the GOP to the contrary, Bill Clinton has never been proven to have non consensual sex with anyone nor to have had sex with anyone under age. Consensual sex with adults is not the same thing as what is going on here with Josh Duggar.

    • Marsha Webb

Clinton never tried to pretend to be holier than thou. He didn’t preach against, and judge others about what they were doing, all the while perpetrating a horrid crime. I don’t care if he was just 14. What about the girls who endured his molestations?

    • Lydia/one2the92the82the5

      Hyperbole strawman.

    • Guest40

Wow, that hard right turn must have really hurt your neck.

    • lindylou

      And then there’s Benghazi!

      • wendy

        Lol

      • Shirl Hadley

        Right?!?! lol

      • Pith_n_Vinegar

        Joshghazi!

    • wendy

Have u not read he molested CHILDREN? Child molestation is inexcusable for liberals or conservatives! I’m not a name caller but if I was, would have a doozie for u!

    • noah vail

it’s disturbing to watch the bullshit dripping from your lips…

    • Teresa Hall

Are you kidding me? I am so sick of this liberal/ conservative BS. No wonder this nation can’t get it’s act together. This has NOTHING to do with politics and EVERYTHING to do with a family portraying themselves as “perfect” Christians whose son molested 5 girls! I don’t care what their politics are, I care that 5 girls were victims. It was hidden and it is not being handled in a way to help the girls but reinforce the notion they are men’s property.
And let’s look at Josh’s logic:
      Gays are child moldsters
So by his own words is he gay?
He could be but I doubt it. The molesters I’ve had to work with were proudly heterosexual but loved children. The homosexuals I know find molesters to be scum like all sane people do.
So you sir are a troll stirring the pot or you have no compassion for the girls and would slap Josh on the back and tell him it’s okay.

    • Gary Hill

Of course you idiots always have to bring Clinton in on it in some TOTALLY NON-RELATED way. Nice way to try and take the attention off of a child molester. Why don’t you just clap your pom-poms together for the dude. The damage Clinton did is completely another matter and did not involve children. You all need a SMACK from Jesus.

    • Ronald N. Wall

I got news for you Mr. Gaul, I’m about as “Liberal” as they come and voted for Pres. Clinton. I was completely disgusted with his lack of control and his inability to keep his zipper up, and I said so. But, even so his consenting adult “victims” were that, consenting adults, not minor children. In your deluded mind, is that even comparable?

    • PRIME79

Lol! Seriously? Clinton had a consenual relationship with an adult woman. This clown was molesting children including his own sisters. I know conservatives tend to be very ignorant but surely you can do better. But then again your nosense fits well with the Duggars, two consenting adults being intimate will “destroy society!” if they are of the same sex but pedaphile priests and guys like Josh Duggar should get a pass and forgiveness because they believe in magic right? We wont even get into the astronomical hypocrisy of the right in general and the Duggar family specifically…accusing gays of being pedaphiles all the while they were hiding an actual pedophile and are now defending him.

    • OMGface

Forgive me, but this pseudo logic is sickening.

    • Pith_n_Vinegar

Monica was a consenting, divorced adult. Get the difference? No, I suppose not.

  • Sunnysmom

On top of the abhorrent nature of his behavior and how it has likely affected his victims, him being the Executive Director at FRC is the ultimate hypocrisy.

    • lindylou

Not at all. He fit right in. Hatred of gays is paramount.

      • OMGface

Certainly among bible thumping replicants it is. Very scary stuff, all of it.

  • Cemetery Girl

The family has been so proud of their conviction to maintain “purity” (as in not only no sexual acts, but not even kissing until marriage), and they hid what happened with their son. Something he has publicly admitted to doing. I see so many comments that he was only 14, so of course he had urges to touch girls. The problems with that are that the family has promoted so heavily that they don’t allow sexual/romantic contact until marriage (it is part of their fame and one of the reasons they are so popular with Christians), but also the bigger problem that the girls he admits touching were probably his sisters! (All of which are, obviously, younger than him.) The family has been vocal about their belief that even once engaged the teens do not spend time with the opposite sex unsupervised if they aren’t part of the family. If he wasn’t allowed around girls that were friends unsupervised, who does that leave for him to molest? He was caught by his father leaving the bedroom of a girl, which lead to the discovery of what had been happening. Again, in their lifestyle he didn’t have opportunity to be visiting the bedrooms of family friends. To have admittedly molested five girls it is only logical that with their strict lifestyle at least some of the girls were his sisters. True, his father did report the matter to an officer. He selected an officer that was a family friend (and happens to now be in prison for crimes against children) and the matter was buried. I’m disgusted by the attitude that this was just a boy being a boy all because he’s part of a family that is celebrated as such good conservative role models.

    • Sunnysmom

Exactly. And a boy being a boy doesn’t mean touching girls against their will or in their sleep without their consent. Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Josh was molested in his young life as well.

      • Cemetery Girl

The problem with the “boys will be boys” defense is that there is no consideration for what actually happened. The police report has been released and states that some were his younger sisters. (Which puts the ages of the four sister closest in age to him as 12-9 when he was 14.) It is unacceptable.
I have actually seen a growing defense of “his parents should have done more to protect him from temptation”. More overlooking the problem of the situation. If younger siblings are too much temptation, there is a problem. Ignoring that a parent should teach a child how to handle urges (not just sexual, but all behavior), but sexual conduct with someone 12-9 shouldn’t be a temptation for a 14 yr old.

      • charlotte

One of the girls was 5-6.

      • Cemetery Girl

Awful. Absolutely awful. How can anyone defend violating a 5-6 yr old? It doesn’t matter that he was a minor, it is not excusable.

      • OMGface

Sick people are blindly moved to defend their like. Is why. Sickening, but true.

      • coppertime

I just read that one of the girls was 4 at the time. She had the police reports taken down today because she is still a minor.

      • Gail Sims Smith

Michelle Dugger has acknowledged using “blanket training” where a child as young a 6 months is placed on the floor on blanket, with a toy just out of reach and told not to leave the blanket. Leaving the blanket to get the toy results in a slap and being placed back on the blanket, until the child “learns” to stay on the blanket. This is done in the name of teaching the child “self-control.” This same mother who expected her 6 month old babies to exert self-control, somehow doesn’t expect the same from teen boys and men, because it is the job of women to dress modestly, and avoid things like shorts and swim suits, so they do not inspire men to impure thoughts or actions. It is not surprising to me that a boy raised in such a setting might have difficulty understanding that responsibility for his actions remains his, despite his position in the family.

    • charlotte

If you actually read the police report it’s clear. Daddy didn’t take him to the police- he took him- after a year and a repeat set of molestation- to an acquaintance who was a cop. They didn’t file a report. Their culture demands they smile because it’s pleasing to God so these girls real feelings aren’t known. Michelle says they have forgiven him.

      • Cemetery Girl

Hopefully the girls have forgiven, per the actual definition of forgiving. I hope that they have let go of the pain the experience would have caused. I hope they don’t carry with them the weight of a situation that they couldn’t have prevented. Not pretending all is fine and nothing happened for the sake of appearances, but the release of the painful emotions that follow in the wake of such a violation. Because of the concealing their parents did I would be surprised if they had the support for that process, but hopefully they found it anyway.

      • lindylou

In this cult, I believe that the girls must BE forgiven.

      • Cemetery Girl

That is a worrisome thought. Children often will feel blame for their abuse, even though they are wrong and only the predator is to blame. The family stresses the importance of remaining completely pure until marriage (as in no sexual touching at all). They teach that females are a temptation and it is their duty to dress and behave modestly to avoid inspiring temptation. If the “counseling” they received was just instruction to pray forgiveness then the girls were not only violated by the molestation but also by the process of trying to recover.

      • OMGface

Let go of? Seriously? U think it’s like right clicking and sending a file to the recycle bin? I so, boy are you disconnected from how humans operate internally.

      • Cemetery Girl

No, letting go of the negative emotions. The anger, the depression, the guilt… It is NOT easy. It does not mean that what happened was OK, that the person that caused harm wasn’t wrong. Holding on to all the negative emotions is toxic. It can cause problems with a person’s health. (Seriously, there are studies that show a connection between childhood trauma and an increased risk of actual diseases like heart disease and diabetes, not to mention disorders like chronic depression and anxiety disorders.) Letting go of the weight of the negative emotions is beneficial. The actual definition of forgiveness is about releasing the hold the event had on you emotionally. It is nothing like the old saying forgive and forget. Forgiving has no requirement to pretend the event didn’t happen or wiping the slate clean. The person that wronged you isn’t absolved. It happened, the person that wronged you still did those things, but you just aren’t continuing the power they have over your life by letting that event dictate your life. Pretending the event never happened isn’t forgiveness and is counterproductive. It is a very hard process, not just some switch you can throw and presto, all is forgiven.

      • Gary Hill

Okay… but wasn’t the person or “friend who was a cop” actually arrested for child pornography or some similar charge?

      • Gail Sims Smith

Yes, he is currently serving a second term for child pornography. Besides this, as a state trooper, he is a mandatory reporter who neglected his legal responsibility to report even a suspected episode of sexual impropriety.

    • Paul Julian Gould

I saw a scan of the original report… If it’s accurate, at least one of those girls was no older than 5…

Puts in in a different category than a “youthful indiscretion,” as the Duggars and their enablers, cheerleaders and fans seem to want to frame it.

    • Teresa Hall

I studied abuse and religious cults in my Sociology degree. The Duggers have always set off an alarm but I could never quite figure out why. With these groups that isolate themselves and only have friendships with like minded folks I worry about the potential for abuse.
We have seen other home schooled children starved, beaten and dead. The home school movement doesn’t want to be monitored but it truly needs to be. I know people that home school and would be fine with a review.
Josh is claiming he’s sorry but I can’t see any real remorse in his words, tone or mannerisms. It’s normal for a boy to experiment at 14 BUT it is normally with a female classmate and is consensual. Here again we run into the home schooling. All these kids with raging hormones and no guidance.
The Quiverfull Sect is so strict about anything sexual that it will not surprise me if more cases from other families come out. I’ve thought about momma Duggers words that it is the woman’s duty to submit to her husband at any time even if she’s sick, not in the mood etc. Was this taught at a young age? Women are chattel in their sect. This woman is still trying to have baby 20! She truly believes her only value is in her womb. I can see this being warped by a child into he has power over the girls and they should submit.
I hope, but doubt, the girls received counseling from a professional and not their pastor.
I feel so bad for those girls they are popping out babies just like mom. They are going to provide a Quiverfull of little Christian soldiers to continue the cycle. There is a woman that got out and has a blog, she shares things the Duggers would frown upon being told.
They are claiming there’s a “war” on Christinaty I have trouble seeing that, but I live in the South. Here it’s us non Christians or former Christians that are looked down on, judged and pretty much keep your mouth shut to avoid the hard sell.
If there is a war it’s on ignorance, bigotry, hate and trying to force the nation into their idea of a perfect Christian nation.
I never liked the show or the duck people, they are free to believe what they want but to then use “fame” to preach divisive hate is going too far.
As for Josh he needs to make a better heart felt statement to the victims. Then his butt needs to be in therapy! They made their life public so don’t run now stand up and take responsibility beyond our son made a mistake. How many 14/15 year old boys are doing time for the same crime.
Yes Josh it’s a crime! You were lucky your Dad knew a child molestating cop to turn you into. So stop acting as if you all are better than everyone else.

      • Tressie Johnson

I’m going for a psychology degree and I’m a strong supporter of early sex ed in class rooms. Starting with the good touch bad touch method as early as possible. Kindergarten most definitely but preschool would also be ideal. Adding on as they grow older. This would help kids understand when they are being abused in such a way that they can get help. I was abused and had no clue what was happening to me. If there had been some early education with support and trust if you need help, I’d have reached out for it. Or it would have been noticed. This story just makes me sick. And goes to show we need a program to protect children from this kind of abuse.

      • Teresa Hall

We may need to rename it. Sex Ed seems to bring imagines of a how to class, to some people. I think it is needed there are still girls going through puberty not knowing this is normal. The pre school should be about how we all have a bubble, our space and how people come into your bubble and touch you in ways that are wrong. I think they would understand it that way. Good touch vs bad touch. Teach them to listen to the inner voice and trust it. If any person makes you feel odd, listen and don’t trust them. I was 12 when an adult grabbed me in a public pool and rubbed on me. I spun around and punch him in the face and screamed at the lifeguard this grown man is grinding his privates on me! The man swam away and nothing was said to him. I like to believe my little scene embarrassed him. It embarassed my Mom & I got in trouble for causing a scene. She never addressed the man’s actions. But if she had I’d been shocked! That’s why I suppost Ed in school, I know first hand how some homes handle sex ed, they ignore it. I wish you all best on your degree!

      • OMGface

It also helps to be raised by sexually healthy, joyful parents! Kinds digest and end up living very subtle messages.

      • lindylou

He claimed that he feared for his own morality. Nothing about how the sisters felt about this. And I thought “self” was not something to promote in the Christofascist world.

      • Cemetery Girl

I think the point about their family teaches that women need to be mindful of their temptation to men brings up valid questions on how were the girls counseled after this happened. The “counseling” he had is considered by many inadequate for helping his problem, so what help did the girls have? The emotions from being sexually abused are difficult enough. Compound those with the an upbringing that preaches that females are temptation and that remaining completely pure until marriage is required, how does someone try to heal?

      • Teresa Hall

I found their “abuse” teachings. It would appear there is no healing because there is no victim. The questionaire is all about what the girl did wrong and how to fix herself. It repeatly says not to go public beyond the church.
The founder of the sect is 75 UN married and stepped down due to a ton of touching complaints against him. The Duggers sent Josh to him for rehab.
I found a group of former members and boy are they talking. The more they do the worse this cult sounds.
There is a story there where a 4 year old was punished because she was immodest when she wore a dress and it enticed the brother. The boy was sent to a camp run by the founder and the girl taught it was her fault that men can’t control themselves.
I was crying reading what they put the girls through. These girls will feel victims but never be allowed to feel and work it out. It will be repressed. They are required to forgive or then more sin is on them.
        It’s Recovering Grace.org

      • Cemetery Girl

After I’d made my comment I did read about the probable “counseling” and it is horrifying. Asking the victim what they did to cause it? Shaming them for the emotions they feel? The “counseling” for abusers questions what others could have done to prevent the temptation. It instructs to blame the victim, not the abuser. Telling victims that it was their fault and they are bad for feeling anger or other negative emotions, it’s sick. The only thing that will come from that “counseling” is destroying the child victim. These teachings on how to handle abuse should be considered abuse themselves.

      • Teresa Hall

I saw an article on FB from a church saying we need to stop re victimizing these girls. I send links and told them these girls do not believe they are victims to please not use your churches views because they will not match theirs. I told them if anything these girls may finally realize that they are victims and it wasn’t their fault. I was afraid Christians would jump to defend faith without knowing the teachings they follow. Of course I haven’t heard from anyone.
These teachings on abuse just create perfect victims and a setting for more victims to be born.

  • QB59

I thought the holier than thou cult aka the Duggars were supposed to have chaperones to prevent sexual contact between horny youngsters. Ooops! I’m just waiting for one of the kids to come out as gay/bi/lesbian or transgender. With as many kids/grandkids as they have, the possibility is there. Wonder if they’d send them to some “reprogramming therapy”?

    • Ronald N. Wall

It is a very safe bet that with that many children and the number of grandchildren growing some of them will be gay. In the repressive atmosphere of the Duggar cult we may never hear about it until one of them has the courage to come out of the closet.

      • tracey marie

Or kills themselves because they are ashamed. Sad!

  • Bmweric

Repressive religious lifestyle does nothing for teenage hormones and if you are told that your erections are shameful except in the context of a pure and chaste Christian Marriage, well look, a boy can get as horny over his sister as any other girl and often they are more available. Shucks, it might even have been mutual. That this happened is totally unsurprising to me. And yea, I feel bad for him, but not for getting caught, but for having been raised in such an insane family.

    • Cemetery Girl

His sisters were all 12 or younger. One would have been around 5 at that point. All were under an age to consent to such activities. Children 12, 11, 10, 9, and 5 are victims, even if the person abusing them convinces them it’s ok.

    • tracey marie

I feel nothing but disgust for him and his filthy parents.

  • Bob Harrow

Cut him some slack. It felt good. In that home pleasure was hard to cum by…

      Not funny.

What I wanna know….how come TLC hasn’t removed this evil from their lineup PERMANENTLY? Are they Fausts?

  • Amasa Delano

In just two days, I’ve seen too many people leaping to the defense of Josh Duggar and his family. It’s not people saying he should be forgiven, either. It’s people saying what he did was just a mistake. Perhaps even worse are the people who ignore what he did altogether and focus on their belief that it’s the “atheist” media attempting to tear apart their religion. People that I once had some level of respect for exposed themselves as extremists who believe that serial sexual molestation of young girls is just a tool being used by the media to attack Christianity.

I think if people would really look into Bill Gothard and his institute, maybe at least a few of them would have some of this fog lifted and be able to listen to reason. They actually published a story in one of their newsletters about midwives who “fixed” delivery problems by removing troll dolls and Cabbage Patch Kids from the home, with their reasoning being that these were evil influences that were preventing childbirth. I think (hope) most modern Christians have moved past this absurd level of magical thinking.

  • wendy

Wait a second! I keep reading about Clinton on this thread. When we all know this whole thing is Obama’s fault

  • Sickandtired

You know what’s even worse about this story? His current wife said that he had told her about what he had done as a teenager, and she still chose to marry him!

She must be totally brainwashed, or the sex is really that good, to want to spend a life with him, and have kids with him.

    • tracey marie

Sex is for procreation not enjoyment to these types, the women must submit to men, period.

2006, Oprah was informed of Joshs behavior, she turned him in to the police and child protective services.
