Glenn Beck Warns That Gay Rights Are Leading Us To Sodom And Gomorrah

Glenn Beck and the rest of the right-wing media are urging their followers to freak out ahead of the Supreme Court’s expected ruling on marriage equality which could come any day now. Just recently, he announced that at least 10,000 members of his “Black Robe Regiment” were willing to die opposing gay marriage and the perceived persecution of Christians by the government. Glenn Beck also compared himself to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr the other day as he announced that he planned to launch his own protest movement that included sit-ins and marches in the style of the late civil rights hero.

While this seems absurd and even an insult to Dr. King’s legacy to the rest of us, it all make sense in the world of the right-wing religious and anti-government folks who eat up every hateful and paranoid soundbite from the right-wing media. If you live inside of that media bubble, you’re fed a daily diet of stories that would have you believe that President Obama is coming for your guns, vaccines are plot to control the population, and that gay people want nothing more than to impose their lifestyle “choice” on every Christian boy and girl.

Yesterday, Glenn Beck made the statement that gay rights activists were making the same demands of Christians as were made of Lot and his family in the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah.

In Beck’s recounting of Genesis 19, two angels arrived at Lot’s house when the men of Sodom and Gomorrah demanded they be sent outside so they could have sex with them, which Lot rejected, offering his own daughter as a substitute. And that is exactly what Christians are facing again today as they too are surrounded and pressured by gay activists who are forcing them to comply.

“Lot has said in his language of his day, ‘Guys, don’t force us to comply. Don’t force us to comply,'” Beck said. “No, you will comply! It shows that even back then, the religious were willing to — they didn’t want to fight, they’re not trying to control everybody — they’re just saying, no, I don’t want to participate.”

“Think of the people who won’t do floral arrangements for gay weddings,” he continued. “Think about the people who are bakers. Now there’s another one with a DJ. They just say, ‘I don’t want to participate.’ That’s what Lot was saying, we don’t want to participate. And in exchange for not participating, I’ll give you something I shouldn’t be offering, but I’ll comprise this far but no further. We’re making exactly the same mistakes and they are making exactly the same demands as were happening in Sodom and Gomorrah.” (Source)

There’s a big problem with Glenn Beck’s claim, aside from the fact that the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah is largely unsupported by historical evidence. While conservative Christians often claim that the two cities were punished for engaging in homosexual behavior and some interpretations of the Bible were written to reflect that view, that story doesn’t hold up under the scrutiny of logic as well as the Bible itself. In fact, Ezekiel 16:49-50 says: “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”

This isn’t the only part of the Bible that conflicts with conservative Christian teachings and the rants of Glenn Beck. There are a number of other verses that also point to the alleged sins of the two cities as being unconcerned with the plight of the poor and needy, not the man-on-man sexy time that Glenn Beck’s obsessing over. If anything, the story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a condemnation of the right-wing’s intolerance and political views, not the LGBT community’s desire to have equal rights and to be treated like human beings.

So why does the rantings of a talk show host with a message tailored to the most hateful and paranoid citizens in our country matter? It’s simple: these people are motivated out of ignorance, hatred and fear. They also vote – do you?

So, homosexual men should be raping women instead? The Sodom and Gomorrah story and Lot’s response really aren’t a good comparison.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Not since the civil rights movement led by Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. and before that the American Revolution 1775-76, has
there been such a determination to correct a wrong. The U.S. Supreme Court in its recent decision
redefining “marriage” will test the will of the people to do just that. As far back as the beginning of time marriage
has been between a man and a woman (cf. Genesis 2:21-24). But perhaps the court’s ruling did not necessarily redefined
marriage. In the narrow 5-4 vote Justice
Kennedy wrote: “The court now holds that same-sex couples
may exercise the fundamental right to marry.” Can that be interpreted as
“marry” in the verb sense, and not having to call it a “marriage” in the noun
sense? Saying, for example, married into “civil union” would not necessarily
redefine marriage. Might the will of the
people want to get behind and reinforce that thought? After all, it is very
possible these past months leading up to the court decision the LGBT community
may have moved too quickly, forcing too much onto the rest of us, to be able to
maintain their position as they see it today.
