As many people have said since Donald Trump launched his campaign nearly three years ago, if a Democrat had said or done even a fraction of the things he has, the Republican Party and the conservative media would have gone absolutely ballistic.
I’ve always known Republicans were hypocrites, but Trump’s rise to the top of the party, along with their acceptance and defense of his ever-growing list of scandals, controversies, and vile behavior, has shown the world just how unbelievable their hypocrisy is.
While most Republicans have sold out to Trump, often refusing to say anything negative about him, there are still a few who, every once in a while, will actually tell the truth about how horrible he is and how pathetically hypocritical their party is to look the other way whenever a new scandal emerges.
Which is what happened on Wednesday when Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) called out his own party for seemingly “looking the other way” as it relates to the fact that Trump possibly illegally paid an ex-adult film star to not speak publicly about an affair they had just before the 2016 election.
“We’re talking about a payment in October of 2016. That is not a long time ago. We’re talking about money that was exchanged in the midst of a presidential campaign. I think that’s problematic, and I think it needs to be viewed for what it is…
If the shoe were on the other foot and there was a Democratic presidential candidate who had done the same, Republicans would probably be holding hearings right now. So what we can’t do is circle the wagons based on tribalism and say we’re going to protect those in our tribe… That doesn’t work and it’s part of what drives a lot of people away from politics. I think we have to be evenhanded in condemnation of things that people get wrong.”
Sanford would know a little something about sex scandals as many may recall he was busted lying about flying to Argentina to see his mistress, telling people he had been hiking in the mountains.
Maybe Sanford’s a little annoyed that he was made to answer for his affair, while most within his party couldn’t care less about any of Trump’s shenanigans. Though I guess it does prove how ridiculous the GOP’s rhetoric about “Christian family values” is considering not only did they elect someone like Trump, but Sanford is a member of Congress despite the fact that he, too, is an adulterer.
Say what you want about Sanford, and there’s plenty to say, but he’s absolutely right to point out that if a Democrat were facing these same allegations about possible illegal payments from a campaign just before the 2016 election to cover up an affair, Republicans would already be holding hearings to investigate the scandal.
Then again, you could say that for any number of scandals and controversies that have been linked to Trump that we all know Republicans would be having a full-on meltdown over had a Democrat been facing them. After all, this is the same party that impeached Bill Clinton over an affair he had with an intern, tried to turn Barack Obama wearing a tan suit into a huge “controversy,” and acted like Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server was the biggest “scandal” to ever hit this country.
As I’ve said plenty of times before, Republicans are the biggest damn hypocrites I’ve ever seen.
