The word “socialism” is one that strikes fear into the hearts of almost every conservative who hears it. Which is funny because most conservatives I’ve encountered in my experiences with politics can’t even define the word, but that’s a topic for another discussion.
So it shouldn’t come as any surprise that Republican candidate for governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, would try to label his opponent Wendy Davis as someone who fraternizes with socialists.
In a press release Abbott said, “Sen. Davis’ fundraising on behalf of an extreme liberal Chicago congresswoman – a member of the Democratic Socialists For America no less – is merely the latest in a series of questions Sen. Davis has refused to answer about her ethics and her judgment.”
Just two slight problems. One, the “extreme liberal Chicago congresswoman” of which Abbott is referring was never a member of the Democratic Socialists for America. Second, the event at which Wendy Davis spoke had nothing to do with fundraising for this Chicago congresswoman. In fact, Wendy Davis wasn’t even the main feature at the event – Lizz Winstead was.
All Wendy Davis really did at the event was talk about Texas and offer an update on her campaign.
It goes without saying Politifact rated this statement by Greg Abbott to be “Pants on Fire,” which is the grade they give statements that are based on absolutely no truth whatsoever.
With their final ruling, Politifact said:
Abbott said Davis raised money for a member of a socialist group.
Davis appeared at a Chicago fund-raiser for Schakowsky, who may have once participated in the Chicago chapter of the DSA and has been saluted by it. Abbott didn’t provide, nor did we find, evidence of Schakowsky being a current member of the group.
We light a match when a statement lacks factual backup and seems ridiculous. Pants on Fire!
These comments were just a blatant attempt by Greg Abbott to slander Wendy Davis, pathetically trying to link her to a socialist group that she had absolutely nothing to do with. Meanwhile, Abbott has been fundraising with an admitted sexual predator. “Conservative family values,” gotta love them.
