On October 1, 2017 a deranged madman opened fire on a crowd of people exiting a concert in Las Vegas, killing 58 and wounding over 500 more. On October 31st, a deranged madman drove a rental truck into a crowd of people in New York City, killing 8 and injuring at least 11 others.
If you knew nothing else about these two attacks, just based on numbers alone, it’s obvious that the shooting in Las Vegas was far more deadly than the vehicular homicide committed in New York City.
Yet there’s clearly been a much different reaction from Donald Trump, the Republican Party, and the conservative media concerning the attack in New York City than there was over what took place in Las Vegas for one very simple reason: the terrorist in New York was a brown Muslim.
A month after a monster killed 58 people in Las Vegas, absolutely nothing has been done. The bump stock which helped the shooter convert his semi-automatic weapons to simulate automatic fire, which allowed him to kill far more quickly and effectively, is still legal to purchase and own. Meanwhile, there hasn’t been a single push by this administration, or Republican members of Congress, to do a damn thing to combat the nation’s gun violence problem and mass shooting epidemic.
They’ve done absolutely nothing.
Wait, no, they did do something. They effectively ignored what took place in Las Vegas, frequently using the line “now isn’t the time to politicize this tragedy” to try to shield themselves from having to defend their asinine pro-gun propaganda while they waited for the news media and nation to simply “move on.”
Fast forward a few weeks, and now suddenly these same hypocrites aren’t using that same line.
Within hours, Trump, the GOP, and the conservative media were practically falling all over themselves to politicize this tragedy, all because this particular act of violence was carried out by a brown Muslim immigrant.
Amazing how that works, isn’t it?
When a white male carries out a heinous act of violence, especially by way of a mass shooting, Republicans do nothing except downplay the incident while playing up the tragic loss of life. They don’t focus on the race, religion, or background of the shooter. If anything, they do their best not to mention any of that unless it’s a person of color or a liberal. And they certainly don’t want to talk about the role guns play in these mass shootings.
Instead, they use the people who died as a shield to say “we can’t politicize a tragedy,” while portraying the killer as just a “mentally-ill sicko who only represents himself.”
Yet the moment a brown-skinned person, especially a Muslim and/or an immigrant, carries out an act of terror, Trump and Republicans seize on that tragedy, instantly pushing their anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant rhetoric.
I can guarantee everyone reading this, had the animal who drove a truck into a crowd of people in New York City been white, the rhetoric coming from Donald Trump, this White House, the GOP, and the conservative media would be entirely different than what we’ve seen since news broke that it was a Muslim immigrant who had pledged allegiance to ISIS.
So don’t tell me this is about trying to prevent tragedies, preserve life, and honor those who were killed, because it’s not. At least not for Donald Trump and Republicans.
This is about pushing bigotry and racism — period.
