While there are several ways Donald Trump could try to spin the news that Michael Flynn has agreed to a plea deal with the FBI, I think what they’re going to ultimately do is try to paint the former national security advisor as a liar they hardly knew who’s willing to say anything just to save his own backside. I think their main talking point will be that since Flynn supposedly lied to Mike Pence (because they’re still claiming they knew nothing about the true nature of his phone calls to Russia last year), that proves he’s a dishonest criminal who the FBI pressured into fabricating even more lies as part of their “witch hunt against Trump.”
We’ve already started seeing the “hardly knew him” part of that with Trump’s lawyer releasing a ridiculous statement saying Flynn was a former Obama administration official and was only Trump’s national security advisor for 25 days.
I’m sure Trump supporters will laughably believe whatever they say because, well, they’ve proven time and time again that they’ll believe anything, no matter how preposterous, as long as this “president” or his administration says it’s true.
The problem with that argument is, it doesn’t make any sense.
This goes back to the fact that reality is reality whether or not Trump supporters want to believe in it. They’re free to believe whatever lies, propaganda, and utter nonsense they want to believe — but that doesn’t change what reality actually is.
First off, Obama fired Flynn and warned Trump to stay away from him during their White House meeting on November 10th of last year. Trump was told in no uncertain terms that Michael Flynn should not be trusted — and Trump proceeded to give him one of the most important positions in our government regardless of that warning.
Second, the FBI wouldn’t have made this deal with Flynn unless he had substantial and credible evidence to back up whatever testimony against Trump, his family, and other campaign officials he’s promised to provide for them. He didn’t just say to them, “I’ll tell you whatever you want to hear” and the FBI instantly made this deal with him. In all likelihood, they had a good idea what the truth was, put a lot of pressure on him, and he agreed to give them the evidence they almost certainly knew he had.
That’s why it’s called a deal.
The FBI isn’t going to go easier on Flynn for some random hearsay or flimsy circumstantial evidence. Whatever they felt he had, or he actually offered them, has to be credible enough that they felt comfortable making a deal with him that could very well lead to formal charges being brought against the current “President” of the United States and his family.
So while I’m sure Trump and his defenders are going to try to spin all of this the best they can, because they know the vast majority of their supporters are naive enough to believe anything they say, the indisputable fact remains that the FBI would never have made any kind of deal with Michael Flynn unless the evidence he had against Trump, his family, and the “president’s” campaign officials was credible and almost certainly indisputable.
While I’m with everyone else in celebrating this news, let me just warn everyone that, while this is a huge step, Donald Trump’s almost certainly going to try to burn everything to the ground if he feels this will ultimately lead to the indictments of himself and his family.
If you thought Trump’s behavior was unhinged before — just wait. It could be about to get a whole lot worse.
