When it comes to showcasing how ignorant someone has to be to support Donald Trump, it isn’t all that difficult. The list of reasons is lengthy and constantly getting longer. Nearly every day I wake up and there’s another reason I sit back and say to myself, “Wow, I can’t believe millions of people are stupid enough to support this man.”
While it’s hard to pinpoint what, exactly, is the best “go-to” example to prove how gullible people are to believe him, his bullshit about free trade agreements and outsourcing jobs is one of his talking points I love using to counter the nonsense his supporters spew.
Donald Trump is someone who built a large part of his campaign on the premise that free trade agreements are terrible, companies that outsource jobs or use cheap foreign labor are awful, and he’s going to be the best jobs president we’ve ever seen. He’s even made bold threats to slap large tariffs on any company that outsources jobs.
Then he announced his “big deal” with Carrier where he claims to have saved 1,000 jobs — that really only turned out to be a few hundred. Not only that, but this just happened to deal with jobs in Indiana, where his vice president-elect happens to still be the governor. So, obviously, this wasn’t Trump negotiating anything, it was Pence offering Carrier millions in tax breaks to bribe the company to not outsource quite as many jobs.
While Trump and his supporters championed this deal as “proof that he’s a job creator,” ultimately all this deal did was provide the perfect blueprint for companies all over the country to threaten to outsource jobs hoping to extort massive tax breaks from Republicans.
Plus it’s not really a “negotiation” if your stance went from “any company that outsources jobs will pay a hefty tariff” to “here’s millions of dollars if you keep a few of those jobs in the country and outsource the rest of them.”
That’s called bribing, not negotiating. Any idiot can go around offering corporations millions of dollars in tax breaks to keep or create jobs in this country. The reason why other presidents haven’t done this isn’t because they’re stupid, it’s because it sets a bad precedent (or as Trump might say, “president”) to let companies know that you’re willing to bribe them to do the right thing. That’s nothing more than a president admitting that they’re willing to be blackmailed by large corporations.
But the part about all of this that I find so hilarious is, while Trump’s made such a big deal about the horrors of outsourcing and vilifying companies that use foreign labor, his companies outsource and use foreign labor.
Furthermore, he hasn’t brought these jobs to the United States.
He launched his campaign over a year and a half ago, yet his companies still outsource a lot of jobs:
Trump cuff links, sport coats, shirts, eyeglasses, lamps, mirrors and neckties are made in China. Some of the ties are also made in Indonesia and Vietnam and some of the shirts in Bangladesh. Trump suits are made in Mexico, India and China.
Trump vodka, distilled in the Netherlands. Furniture, made in Turkey. And his crystal barware, made in Slovenia (the home country of his wife, Melania).
If he’s such an “America-first job creator,” then why are so many of his own company’s products made in foreign countries? Rationally speaking, one would think that if an American business owner is going to talk big and bad about the evils of using foreign manufacturing to create products for American companies, his companies’ jobs would have been the first to be brought to the United States. Then again, most business owners who’ve outsourced a lot of their own company’s manufacturing probably wouldn’t run a campaign based upon attacking businesses for doing exactly what they’ve done.
On the other hand, if they’re supported by people who are as naive as the folks who support Trump, you can get away with pretty much anything as long as you’re telling them what they want to hear. After all, these are people who support a man who hasn’t brought his own company’s manufacturing jobs to the United States, all while he’s ran a campaign based on attacking business owners who do exactly what he’s done and continues to do. Someone who bragged about the bribe he gave to Carrier so they would keep a few jobs in the U.S., while he hasn’t brought his own company’s manufacturing jobs to this country.
It really does take a special kind of stupid to be a Donald Trump supporter.
