When I first saw someone on Twitter post about another scandal involving Donald Trump, this time allegedly paying an adult film actress to not speak out about an affair they had back in 2006, I’ll admit I did a quick Google search to find out what was going on. Not because I particularly cared, but I knew it was a “story” that was almost certainly going to be making the headlines.
So, according to The Wall Street Journal, Trump’s attorney arranged a $130,000 payment to an adult film actress just before the election so she wouldn’t speak out about an alleged affair the two had back in 2006.
I’m begging everyone reading this, please, can we stop acting like we really care? Moreover, can we stop acting like Trump supporters are going to?
Who reading this honestly believes that had this adult film actress publicly spoke out about this alleged affair with Trump, that any of his supporters would have not voted for him? These are the same people who know he belittled POWs, attacked a Gold Star family, mocked a man with disabilities, bragged about sexually assaulting women, and had at least 16 women accuse him of some sort of sexual abuse — and they voted for him anyway.
And guess what? A consensual affair with an adult film star doesn’t rank above any of what I just listed. Hell, it wouldn’t even rank in the Top 100 terrible things Trump’s said or done over the past 12 months.
Look, I get why this is “news” and it’s making headlines. Under normal circumstances it most definitely should.
Unfortunately, we’re not living in normal times. We’re up against possibly the biggest threat this country has faced in decades living in our very own White House. An unfit, unhinged racist who literally brags about the size of his non-existent nuclear button because he’s a mental infant, who’s inspired white nationalism to public levels not seen in decades, and is doing everything in his power to run this country like a dictator. He’s ignored attacks on our democracy, undermines the credibility of U.S. intelligence agencies, attacks our First Amendment on a daily basis, slanders our judicial branch, alienates us from our allies, empowers our enemies, and is ruining the image of the United States to such an extent that I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to repair the damage he’s done.
This is what I mean when I say we need to stay focused. Yes, if this were any other “president,” finding out that they had an affair on their current wife with an adult film actress would be huge news. Is it unfair that Trump’s not held to those same standards? Absolutely.
It is what it is and we can’t change that. Until his supporters actually start holding him accountable for something then, as unfair and absurd as it is, the sad truth is that we’re up against a man who gets to operate under a different set of rules than everyone else.
Again, yes, that’s unfair — but it’s just our current reality and I don’t see it changing anytime soon.
That said, for me, this is about picking our battles when it comes to standing up to Trump. There are so many other terrifying aspects to this “presidency” that concern me far more than whether or not he paid some adult film star to be silent over an affair they had back in 2006.
Again, this is a guy who was exposed on video bragging about trying to sleep with a married woman, and about sexually assaulting others, while he was, himself, married. Had this story come out before the election, it wouldn’t have mattered — because his supporters simply don’t care.
If we’re going to spend time talking about Trump’s sexual exploits, then let’s focus more on the allegations from at least 16 women who’ve accused him of unwanted sexual abuse rather than a consensual affair with an adult film actress.
Maybe I’m wrong, but that’s just my two-cents.
