Hillary Clinton Scores Key Victory, Wins a Close Kentucky Primary

With the end of the 2016 Democratic primary quickly approaching, I’m sure it’s easy for some to forget that there are still several states that have yet to vote. Though outside of New Jersey and California, the rest of the upcoming states offer, at best, only a moderate amount of delegates.

With 55 delegates at stake, a state like Kentucky is still a place both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders clearly wanted to win – and the Clinton campaign can now celebrate that victory, as MSNBC has projected her the winner of Kentucky in a close contest.

So, what’s this mean going forward?

Well, for Clinton, this was a big win; she definitely needed the optics of this victory even if the delegates are essentially going to be split pretty much evenly. At this point for Clinton, the delegates don’t matter as much as simply getting a few wins before California. While she’s still the overwhelming frontrunner, after losing Indiana and West Virginia, the optics of her campaign began to look bad. So while she won’t expand her lead over Sanders very much, just getting the “win” is big for her campaign – and that’s honestly all she really needed.

As for Sanders, this is another big blow to a candidate whose chances are becoming more and more unlikely with every state. While he won the last two contests, he didn’t do so by the type of margins he needed to win by in order to catch Clinton by the end of this process. So, while the delegates from Kentucky are basically going to be split evenly between the two, even had Sanders won tonight, anything below 66 percent of the vote is really a “loss” for his campaign.

So, with a few more weeks left in this race, congratulations to Hillary Clinton on her very close victory in Kentucky.
