Why anyone would want to be Donald Trump’s White House press secretary is anyone’s guess. Under normal circumstances it’s a job that’s already incredibly difficult and stressful. However, what we’re dealing with right now are not “normal circumstances.” To have to go out there in front of reporters day after day (or at least that’s how it’s supposed to work), having to answer questions for this “president” seems like a nightmare.
I’m sure Sean Spicer had hoped things would have ended differently – after all, being the White House press secretary is a huge opportunity – but I’m fairly certain after he resigned at least part of him was relieved that he’d no longer have to do the job currently held by Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
On Thursday, during the first White House press conference in three weeks, Sanders was embarrassed by reporters grilling her about Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t provide funding for his border wall.
Specifically, Sanders was asked why Trump’s threatening a government shutdown unless Congress provides funding to build his border wall when he spent the better part of the last two years promising that Mexico was going to pay for it.
“The President’s committed to making sure this gets done,” Sanders replied. “We’re going to continue to push forward and make sure that the wall gets built.”
“Why is he threatening a shutdown over paying for it?” the reporter responded. “I mean, again, he said over and over again — you talked about the campaign — over and over again, he said Mexico’s going to pay for the wall. He asked people—crowds chanted back at him, Mexico’s going to pay for it and now he’s threatening a shutdown of the government.”
“Once again, the President’s committed to making sure this happens and we’re going to push forward,” Sanders stated, never actually answering the question.
Later on, another reported pointed out that recently Trump hasn’t asserted — as he has so many times in the past — that Mexico would be paying for the wall.
“He hasn’t said they’re not, either,” Sanders replied.
Let’s just get this out of the way: Under no circumstances whatsoever is Mexico paying for the border wall — it’s never going to happen.
This was a clear trolling by these reporters asking Sanders questions they knew she wouldn’t answer because there was no way for her to lie her way out of them. Anyone with even a shred of common sense knows Mexico is never going to pay for that wall — and there’s no way Trump can force them to, either.
What these questions did was force the White House press secretary to embarrass herself by doing whatever she could to avoid admitting Trump has absolutely no way to make Mexico pay for the wall or that he was blatantly lying when he spent most of his campaign, and part of his “presidency,” saying he was going to.
This is what things have come to. This administration, and the “president,” are so ridiculous that professional reporters are now essentially trolling the White House press secretary by asking questions they know aren’t going to be answered just to see what sort of absurd response they’ll get.
It really is a sad time in this country.
