For a while now I’ve insisted that Donald Trump is one of the weakest “presidents” in this country’s history. It’s rather obvious that while most congressional Republicans continue to publicly defend and support Trump when they’re forced to, many of them know has no business being “president,” have no respect for him, and couldn’t care less about what he has to say.
That’s why, as CNN’s Jake Tapper pointed out Monday, you rarely see any sort of reaction from lawmakers following Trump’s daily Twitter meltdowns.
After acknowledging the hypocrisy of Republicans turning a blind eye to Trump hosting Don King, Judge Jeanine Pirro, and Sean Hannity from Fox News, pointing out how Barack Obama meeting with rapper Common was a “huge scandal” due to some controversial lyrics, Tapper said GOP lawmakers treat Trump like a child who constantly has temper tantrums.
“President Trump sends out these tweets — and there’s really no response from Congress,” Tapper pointed out. “They don’t even react anymore. House Speaker Paul Ryan, Seante Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the Democrats. It is almost like, this is not a flattering metaphor, but it is like a child that you’re just used to pitching a fit so you just ignore them.”
Sadly, he’s right.
If members of Congress, even Democrats, responded to all of Trump’s idiotic tweets, they’d never do anything else.
Just like a child, either you give them what they want — which is usually not a good idea — or you do your best to ignore the hissy fit knowing that you’re the adult and they’ll eventually wear themselves out.
While I agree with Tapper’s statement, and I get why most members of Congress, if they can, will ignore Trump’s unhinged rants, it’s still a sad state of affairs that we’re forced to all live with this. These gutless Republicans are too scared to simply say that enough is enough. No amount of loyalty is worth tolerating an incompetent madman as “president” simply because there’s an “R” next to his name.
Especially when you consider the hypocrisy that these same Republicans would never let a Democrat get away with even a fraction of what Trump’s said, done, or been accused of.
As I’ve said for a very long time now, Donald Trump’s a national embarrassment who can’t be out of office soon enough. Whether it’s through resigning, impeachment, or electing someone else in 2020, I cannot wait for the first day this fool is no longer “president” so we can all begin doing our best to erase this nightmare from our memory and fix the damage he’s done.
