Over the last few months, CNN’s Jake Tapper has made quite the name for himself as someone who hasn’t shied away from being candid when calling out the never-ending chaos surrounding Donald Trump and his administration.
So it should come as no surprise that the host of The Lead absolutely tore into Trump’s comments Tuesday where he not only defended blaming “many sides” for the violence in Charlottesville on Saturday, but he also defended some of the racists who showed up to defend Confederate monuments, and compared traitors Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson with Founding Fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
“His staff spent days insisting that he was condemning the Ku Klux Klan and Nazis and white supremacists and was not equating them with the counter-protesters, some of whom obviously were also violent,” Tapper explained. “That he was focusing on the Nazis and the racists who had come into this progressive college town and marched and chanted saying anti-Semitic things and racist things.”
He then called Trump’s attempt to seemingly compare both sides as equals “stunning.”
Later, Tapper made sure to point out how Trump’s been more than willing to quickly label any act of terrorism carried out by a Muslim “radical Islamic terrorism,” saying it’s “impossible” to imagine the “president” trying to blame both sides had the monster who drove into a crowd of people, killing one, been an Islamic extremist.
He concluded the segment by issuing a powerful statement about the utter insanity that’s taken over this country over the last few months.
“Sometimes I hear from viewers who say to me, ‘Thank you for being on air because I feel as though I’m going insane, and you remind me that I’m not,'” Tapper explained. “To anybody out there watching today who is confused and thinks, ‘I thought that the Klan and neo-Nazis and white supremacists, I thought there was no debate about this thing anymore among civilized people’ — there isn’t a debate about it.”
Besides being a great way to end Tuesday’s show, his words hit home with me. Not only have I jokingly questioned my own sanity when trying to keep up with Trump’s unhinged behavior, but I’ve had people who follow my writing thank me for helping them keep theirs.
No matter how long this goes on, it’s still hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that there are millions of people who still support Trump. I understand politics enough to know that a politician’s base is almost never going to turn on him, but even as low as Trump’s approval ratings have been, roughly 4 out of 10 Americans still approve of the job he’s done since being sworn into office.
When Trump called his supporters mindless sheep who’d support him no matter what he did, he was absolutely right. The vast majority of Trump’s supporters have proven, time and time again, that no matter how many lies he tells, scandals are tied to him, or how shameful his behavior — they’ll never question him or believe anything negative about him.
It’s a rather unnerving time in this country to have a “president” as corrupt, dishonest, and incompetent as Donald Trump who’s not being held accountable for anything that he says or does by most of the members of his party or the millions of people who support him.
