It’s no secret that Republicans absolutely cannot stand Hillary Clinton – though I think their disdain for her is derived more from the fact that they’re terrified of having to face her in an election than any sort of negative feelings toward her actual politics.
So when the former First Lady, New York Senator and Secretary of State announced that she was going to run for president on Sunday, it was expected that the reaction from the GOP would be quite abrasive.
But the truth is, their attacks on her weren’t as abrasive as much as they were just childish and immature. Heck, Sen. Rand Paul basically had a complete meltdown on Twitter following her announcement, sending out 28 anti-Hillary tweets in the span of a few hours.
Needless to say, the right-wing freak out following Hillary’s announcement did not go unnoticed by Jon Stewart.
After poking fun at the fact that Paul’s first real campaign ad is directed at Clinton – someone he’s not even currently running against – Stewart slammed the creepiness of Sen. Ted Cruz’s response.
“Are you f*cking kidding me?” Stewart asked. “Rand Paul’s got Saatchi and Saatchi on the case. Priebus is manufacturing premiums, and you’re banging out a quick Vine on what looks like the set of a 1970s p*rno shoot?”
Hyperbole aside, he’s right. Cruz’s video looked as if it was filmed in some seedy room with poor lighting, appearing more like something some college student might shoot with an iPhone at their apartment rather than an “official” response from a GOP presidential candidate.
Then Stewart took aim at the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre who said at this year’s NRA convention that “eight years of one demographically symbolic president is enough.” In other words, it’s time we get back to the good ol’ fashion white guys living in the White House.
But that wasn’t all LaPierre said. Later he went on to describe a potential Hillary presidency as some absurdly over-the-top bleak, desolate existence that would essentially reduce this country to ashes.
“And when you and your children are walking this haunted wasteland, feasting on the bodies of the dead, crying out to God to save you from your cursed existence, you will rue the day you voted for a center-leftish establishment Democrat,” Stewart mocked.
To put it into perspective just how petty the conservative attacks were on Hillary, following the release of her video online, Paul’s campaign website began selling broken hard drives for $100 to mock the “email scandal” Republicans tried their best to get to stick – except nobody really cared.
How juvenile can someone be? And he wants to be president? Paul needs to learn how to act like an adult first.
Unfortunately, I see these attacks going from petty to downright vile. The truth is, the only “plan” the GOP seems to have to try to defeat Hillary in 2016 is to slander her as much as possible – which is exactly what they’ve been trying to do for the last three years.
Luckily, she’s not intimidated by them. She’s been there, done that, and I fully believe at the end of the day she’s going to end up cruising to an easy victory with a big smile on her face.
