Jon Stewart Slams Republican Stupidity in Texas, Asks ‘What Would Jesus Shoot?’ (Video)

jon-stewart-texas-1Being a liberal in Texas isn’t easy. I’m constantly surrounded by people who literally seem to make up reality as they go along. Many of these people see facts as opinions and believe the Bible is more credible than science books.

Needless to say, I get frustrated from time to time.

Well, on last night’s episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart perfectly slammed the ridiculousness of many Texas Republicans. While talking about what he believes is a pipe dream by some Democrats to turn Texas blue, he pointed out how radical Greg Abbott (likely our next governor) and Dan Patrick (likely our next lieutenant governor) are. How can Texas possibly be “turning blue” in the near future when these two jackasses are not just going to win – but win by a landslide?

First he pointed out how Greg Abbott once posted the popular internet meme that shows a gun and a Bible with the caption: “Two things every American should know how to use, neither of which are taught in schools.” He also once said that Democrats posed more of a threat to Texas than North Korea.

“Isn’t it time your kid’s teacher asked the question, ‘What would Jesus Shoot?'” Stewart asked, mocking Abbott’s gun and Bible post.

Then he turned his attention to Dan Patrick; a man who believes that creationism should be taught in school, wants to end the popular election of U.S. senators and wants to ban any and all abortions – even when the pregnancy is a result of rape.

“You couldn’t be redder than that guy if you took Clifford the Big Red Dog and shoved him into the Devil’s rectum,” Stewart said of Patrick. “That’s as red as red can red.”

Then we can’t forget Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) who recently said gays shouldn’t serve in our military because they would be too obsessed with getting massages from someone of the same sex, weakening our military. And he was dead serious.

The sad part is, these candidates don’t just win – they’re winning by huge margins.

But a big part of the reason for that is many conservatives in Texas don’t know who they’re voting for. They see a few campaign ads, vote straight-ticket Republican and call it a day. I’m willing to bet that 90 percent of the women who’ll vote for Dan Patrick this year have no idea that he opposes abortions even when the woman was raped. And I’m positive that around 7 out of 10 conservatives don’t know more than two things about Greg Abbott’s platform.

And when it comes to Greg Abbott, get ready to hear a lot more about him very soon. If you think Rick Perry is bad, you haven’t seen anything yet. Abbott is going to make Perry look like a moderate by comparison.

Texas is on the verge of becoming possibly the most radically right-wing state in the country. With a soon-to-be governor who makes George W. Bush look like a Democrat, a lieutenant governor who honestly believes that humans and dinosaurs walked the Earth together, and downright imbeciles such as Louie Gohmert and Ted Cruz.

It turns my stomach to even think about it.

And if liberals not just in Texas, but all over this country don’t start getting off their asses and voting – Republicans are going to take this country over.

I just really hope we don’t let that happen.

Pretty much sums it up. I couldn’t have said it better myself.

  • Jim Valley

When a totally radical Tea Party governor and a compliant legislature used Kansas as a “laboratory” to show the benefits of far-right-wing governance, the result was to turn Kansas into an economic basket case. The governor cut taxes on the rich so much that the state’s credit rating has been downgraded TWICE in the past year. He cut so much from Kansas education funding that a court order was necessary to prevent further damaging cuts. Many republican leaders in the state are supporting his Democratic challenger this year.

My question is, if “conservative values” are so wonderful, why are the places where they are in full force such nightmares for the people who live there?

    • Jillz

If someone doesn’t stop them (please Democrats, get out and vote on Tuesday!), Republicans are going to turn the USA into a third world country. Kansas is showing how they are going to do it.

In response to the Oct. 29 news article “ Democrats’ get-out-the-vote tactic: Shame”: I am a lifelong Democrat. I have never voted for any other party in the 30-plus years I’ve been able to vote. For the past seven years, I have also been a resident in Orange County.

Over the past few weeks, I have received three mailings from the Democratic Party advising me that whether I vote is a matter of public record. The intent of these letters is clearly to intimidate voters in order to get out the vote. Such tactics are abhorrent, and those in the party who authorized this should feel ashamed. The ends do not justify the means.

In protest, therefore, against the heavy-handed tactics of my own party, I have decided not to vote Nov. 4. I have no love or fondness for any of the Republican candidates – far from it – but I will not be browbeaten in this way. I encourage others who feel similarly to likewise withhold their vote.

Intimidation to muster the vote is no less evil than intimidation to suppress the vote.

Pivot of Civilization, 1922. Here, Progressive Margaret Sanger speaks on her eugenic philosophy – that only the types of “quality” people she and her peers viewed as worthy of life should be allowed to live.

Such parents swell the pathetic ranks of the unemployed. Feeble-mindedness perpetuates itself from the ranks of those who are blandly indifferent to their racial responsibilities. And it is largely this type of humanity we are now drawing upon to populate our world for the generations to come. In this orgy of multiplying and replenishing the earth, this type is pari passu multiplying and perpetuating those direst evils in which we must, if civilization is to survive, extirpate by the very roots.

Woman, Morality, and Birth Control. New York: New York Publishing Company, 1922. Page 12.

We should hire three or four colored ministers, preferably with social-service backgrounds, and with engaging personalities. The most successful educational approach to the Negro is through a religious appeal. We don’t want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population, and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.

      • Jillz

With the exception maybe of the last point (bombing other countries) your comment makes absolutely no sense to me.

I find it very offensive how the right continues to make ugly, false equivalences using slavery – that was a despicable period in American history and shouldn’t now be being used by political parties to try and further their partisan talking points.

As an aside, I believe you said above that you weren’t planning on voting tomorrow. I am not an American, but a Canadian watching in horror at what GOP obstruction is doing to your country. From what you said in your post, I agree that the Dem mailout you received is offensive and I agree that it sounded like browbeating and/or intimidation. However, please consider the alternative – if the GOP takes the Senate tomorrow, the problems of the past couple of years are going to seem like child’s play – they will finish turning the country upside down.

I hope you can rise above the b/s political tactics being used on both sides (as they both use ugly tactics) and as distasteful as it is, hold your nose and vote for the party that turns your stomach less.

    • youcantgetridofmethateasy

    • Jim Bean

You wrote: “My question is, if “conservative values” are so wonderful, why are the places where they are in full force such nightmares for the people who live there?”

My answer would be that your question is predicated on mistaken beliefs. Of the ten states with the fastest growing economies, most are red. Of the ten states with the slowest growing economies, most are blue.

      • Jim Valley

This is, of course, nonsense. When the states are ranked by average household income, the bottom seven states (Mississippi, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana) are all red states. Five of the top six states (Maryland, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire) are blue states. A similar result is seen in the rankings by per capita income.

But beyond this, red states (and the conservative rural areas of blue states) have higher incidences of every social woe: abortion, divorce, drug addiction, obesity, high-school dropouts, pollution, and a host of others. In every case, these differences are due to differences between liberal and conservative governance.

If you want an example of unrestricted conservative values in “full force”, look again at the sad, sorry situation in bright red Kansas, my original example, where even republicans have turned against their Tea Party governor to support his Democratic challenger.

You will never convince me that conservative policies make life better for the citizens where they are imposed. Corporations, yes. Rich people, yes. Citizens, no. Sorry.

      • youcantgetridofmethateasy

Oh Jimmy Boy, when ranked by ‘Cost of Living”, your results are reversed. When ranked by the quantity of receivers of ‘Entitlements’, your results are reversed. In the last four presidential elections, NJ voted for the Democrat in all four and NH voted for the Democrat in three. The “red/blue” divide is somewhat arbitrary, but these two states are clearly not dominated by southern-style extreme social conservatives. Hence they are doing much better than the national average.

How many people have been murdered in stupid jihads, wars, toxic waste dumps, and all sorts of other ways. This abortion thing is silly and so are you.

Firstly, you are referencing the incident in Houston, not Austin. And nothing illegal or shady happened there either as a pastor filed a lawsuit with the city and the opposing lawyers legally obtained documents from the pastor in question and anyone they may have deemed relevant to the lawsuit. They were legally building a case just like they would’ve in any other situation. Also, the mayor was unaware of the activities.

Texas is making it as difficult as possible for women to not only receive abortions, but basic female healthcare and birth conteol as well. Their standards for Planned Parenthood type facilities are intentionally ridiculous so they are forced to close down. Until a judge recently overturned these unconstitutional laws, there were only 7, SEVEN, facilities open in the giant state of Texas. Women, especially in rural areas, would have to drive several hours to see a doctor if they could manage to squeeze in an appointment.

And I hate to break it to you, but abortions have been around since pregnancy. It has been documented in many ancient cultures and has always been a part of humanity. And, what a lot of “Christians” don’t even realize is that according to the Bible, God is not only okay with abortions, but even encourages them in certain situations like adultery or if a fetus will be born into a life of suffering. He also says that life begins at first breath (NOT conception) and that the death a human caused by another human deserves harsher punishment (death penalty) than does a miscarriage caused by a human (pay a fine). And yes, I for one am proud that those 50+ million women got to choose their fate, that they had control over their own bodies and destinies. Because if we were in a country where the government decides, like Ecuador for example, many of those women would’ve died from their pregnancies or suffered permanent mental or emotional trauma, or would’ve raised children with abusive father’s, or raised unwanted children, or tossed their babies onto society, or worse, into a dumpster to die cold, alone and hungry. At the other end of the spectrum, in China, where the government decides, women are FORCED to have abortions. They don’t get to decide how to grow their families, the government does. So while yes, abortion is an unpleasant medical procedure and a decision I would NEVER wish upon anyone, it is extremely necessary that WE as individuals get to decide whether or not we are going to have one and we should have full access to a safe and professionally preformed abortion. It is a Constitutional right, something the right claims to care so deeply about.

And yet Abortions because of medical emergencies continue to be performed in every hospital when the when the life of the pending mother is in jeopardy.
What you’re describing is Abortions for Convenience.
Too many miles to drive to consult with a ‘real’ medical Doctor and have the procedure in a Certified facility?
Just how long after conception does a non-mother need to make that appointment and drive to the Facility? I’ll bet it’s longer than it took for her to be fertilized. Where is the ‘Personal Responsibility’?
Once again, 56 million murdered unborn babies and partial-birth babies. Care to disclose just how many of them were to save the life of the child-bearer? No one ever posts that number. It shoots your argument chock full of holes if you did.

“Toward the end of his life, Ray, whose sentence had been extended to 100 years after he escaped from prison in 1977, had the support of an unexpected ally: the King family. Not long before Ray’s death, Dexter King, Dr. King’s son, visited the man presumed to be his father’s killer. Ray, who was feeble and sick from hepatitis C, was asked by King about his involvement in the assassination. “I had nothing to do with killing your father,” Ray said. “I believe you,” Dexter King responded, and shook his hand.

Ray died in prison in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 23, 1998.”

Any else notice that when Stewart hammers Republican stupidity Allen always sees fit to pass it along and when Stewart hammers Democrat stupidity (like he did the other night when he talked about Dems running from Obama like he was the villain in a Chain Saw Massacre movie) Allen doesn’t see it as something worth discussing?
