To see the right-wing reaction to Benjamin Netanyahu’s re-election, you would have thought he just defeated President Obama or Hillary Clinton to become President of the United States. Various Fox News personalities were basically swooning over the news that the almost always wrong Israeli leader would be serving another term as prime minister.
Though I find their admiration for him rather interesting considering that conservative have often accused President Obama of being some out of control tyrant; meanwhile Netanyahu has already served as prime minister for nine years and seems eager to continue to rule over Israel more like a dictator rather than someone who came to power, served his time, then gracefully relinquished it. While there aren’t term limits in Israel, it does say something about the man that he seems almost unable to move on and let new leadership lead the Middle Eastern nation.
Well, Jon Stewart blasted the Israeli prime minster Wednesday night on The Daily Show. He started off by playing several clips of people discussing Israel’s floundering economy and increasing income inequality under Netanyahu’s leadership.
A floundering economy and increasing income inequality – yup, sure sounds like Israel is being led by a conservative, alright.
He then accused Netanyahu of ripping off the Republican party’s trademark on racist fear-mongering for political gain after the prime minister said just prior to the elections that “Arab voters are going to vote in droves, left-wing groups are bringing them in buses.”
“How dare you,” Stewart said. “How dare you gin up racist fears of minority turnout for short-term political gain. That’s our thing.”
Stewart also went on to mock the reaction from some on Fox News who seemed appalled that President Obama didn’t quickly get on the phone to congratulate Netanyahu on his victory.
“Really? You find it interesting that a foreign country’s prime minister, who came to Congress against the White House’s wishes and sh*ts on a nuclear deal the president spent years working on, wouldn’t receive an immediate post-election ‘atta boy?’” he asked.
The bottom line is, Netanyahu is really nothing more than a tea party wannabe. He’s just about everything the far right in this country would want in a leader. He’s extremely conservative, religious, anti-Muslim, racist, dislikes President Obama and he’s a warmonger. He is the epitome of what Republicans want in a leader.
It really is sickening to see that we’re at a point in this country where millions of conservatives will express glee over the victory of a foreign leader while having such an irrational disdain for our own president.
Just like Republicans do to their own party’s political ideologies, their infatuation with Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be built more on propaganda rather than facts. The bottom line is he hasn’t made Israel any safer, their economy is weak and almost every big promise he’s made over the last 20+ years has been wrong.
The truth is, the only reason why conservative adore this guy like they do is because he doesn’t like President Obama – that’s it. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do, all you need to do is dislike this president and that’s enough for conservatives to become some of your biggest fans.
That’s just how petty and small-minded millions of conservatives are.
