Judge Rules that Florida Republicans Tried to Rig Congressional Elections

florida-election-resultsOut of all the corrupt issues plaguing politics, gerrymandering might be one of the worst.  I’ve never quite understood the “logic” behind letting politicians redraw congressional lines.  That’s like trusting a burglar with the keys to your house while you’re away on vacation.

I’ve always argued that third party, non-partisan groups should be assigned to draw congressional maps.  I don’t believe either party should have control over the process, because I don’t believe either can be trusted.

By allowing politicians to redraw these districts, it essentially allows for states that are strongly controlled by one particular party to rig elections.

Republicans in Texas have been doing it for years.  And while Democrats do it from time to time, Republicans have become well known for trying to rig Congress by redrawing House districts to favor the Republican party.

Unethical gerrymandering by the GOP is how Republicans currently control the House of Representatives, despite the fact that they lost the overall popular vote by over 1.5 million votes.

A great example of this unethical behavior can be seen in Florida where a judge ruled that Republicans in the state illegally redrew the state’s congressional districts and “made a mockery” of the amendment voters passed which was meant to bring fairness to the redistricting process.

Judge Terry P. Lewis of Florida’s Second Judicial Circuit made it clear in his 41-page decision that he believes conservative influence clearly infiltrated Florida’s Legislature.

“Republican political consultants or operatives did, in fact, conspire to manipulate and influence the redistricting process,” the judge wrote.

Officials for the Republican party in Florida had no comment.

During the trial legislative staffers and lawmakers took the stand to testify about steps they followed during the redistricting process.  Several of those who testified admitted to destroying documents that outlined what went on during the process of redrawing several congressional districts.

Republicans are “outraged” because an official at the IRS lost emails due to a hard drive crash.  Could you imagine if they admitted to willfully destroying possible incriminating evidence during a trial?  And I’m sorry, unethically redrawing congressional districts is a much bigger deal than anything Republicans are accusing the IRS or doing.

By rigging congressional districts, Republicans were essentially rigging the House of Representatives.

Though I’m sure you won’t hear about any of this in the right-wing media or on Fox News.

I’m just glad this judge told it like it is and called the Republican party out for doing what they’ve been trying to do in many states for years – rig our elections.

Instead of the republican mantra to be more inclusive they try and win elections by being more exclusive. If their policies really worked they wouldn’t have to rig districts in their favor to win elections.

Voter ID laws are a ruse to distract the public from the voter fraud from the politicians.

Now that the courts have thrown back to Congress many provisions dealing with voting rights (such as the need for pre-approval before changing the voting districts), what are the odds that Congress is going to act on it to straighten out this mess ?

Well, the senate will put forth logical, measured and fair policy, and the house will lock it up in hearings and amendments until pigs fly. Unless… PEOPLE VOTE IN NOVEMBER. VOTE THESE ASSHOLES OUT!

  • Thats how Bush got elected…repubs are cheating bastards

Bush was selected by the Supreme Court when they stopped the vote counting in Florida. He won reelection because of rigged voting machines.

Yes, they can’t WIN on policy, so they cheat with any means necessary.

They are desperate and know they can’t win elections unless they are rigged through over spending, gerrymandering, and voter suppression, and other election tricks. They have no message, no policies other than tax breaks for the rich. What a reprehensible group of people has the GOP has become. Intellectually bankrupt and morally despicable. What bothers me most is that they know they are doing it but they swear on their mother’s grave that all they want are fair elections. Fairness and the GOP do not belong in the same sentence.

Oh my…what’s a party with no ideas to do?

draw the lines as close to longitude and latitude as possible.

And now you know why they distract you with voter ID, birth certificates, wars, healthcare, and Benghazi.
