Over the years, Saturday Night Live has been an unlikely force in politics. While not exactly a place many rely upon for actual news (unlike Comedy Central’s The Daily Show which is a comedy show that actually covers real news events), SNL has been a place where some candidates have gained some much-needed exposure during election years.
It’s also hilariously mocked several candidates as well. Perhaps the most famous examples of this are Will Ferrell’s fantastic impersonation of George W. Bush and Tina Fey’s nearly flawless imitation of Sarah Palin.
Well, for the 2016 election, Larry David’s impersonation of Bernie Sanders has stolen the show. A few months ago he made national headlines playing Sanders during a skit mocking the Democratic presidential debate that was absolutely hilarious. While I won’t say the two look exactly alike (aside from being bald white males with gray hair), his mannerisms and dictation are almost identical to Sanders.
So when I heard David was going to be hosting SNL and once again take on the role of “Bernie Sanders,” I knew it was going to be great – and it absolutely was. Taking a note out of David’s show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, he parodied Sanders in the days leading up to the Iowa Caucus.
To try to transcribe this skit wouldn’t do it justice. It really is something you have to see to appreciate so I would encourage everyone to take about five minutes and watch the video below. Trust me, it’s well worth it.
If you can’t watch it, I’ll try to summarize it the best I can.
It basically plays off two scenarios. In one, “Sanders” refuses to shake the hand of a female supporter who’s at a rally with her family who had just coughed into the hand she wanted him to shake, claiming he doesn’t want to catch her germs. The twist to that is that she’s African-American, which gets played into “Sanders refuses to shake the hand of an African-American woman.” During another part, “Sanders” is at the scene of an accident where a woman says she was headed to vote for him and asked him if he could pop her dislocated shoulder back in place. It’s a request “Sanders” refuses, much to the dismay of the woman who shouts “F*ck you Bernie!” as he runs away.
Fast forward some to the campaign staff watching the results of the Iowa Caucus coming in, showing Sanders losing by 0.2 percent of the vote. One campaign person says that equals “about five people.” The television they’re watching then pans over to the two women from before, and their family (exactly five people), wearing Hillary Clinton shirts as “Sanders” stares at the screen distraught.
Like I said, words cannot describe how funny this sketch was. I watched it twice before writing this and laughed both times. Larry David’s impersonation is absolutely fantastic. I might even put it right there beside Tina Fey as Sarah Palin. (Fey still gets the slight edge, but that could change depending on how often David reprises his role as Sanders.)
Trust me, take five minutes and watch the skit. It’s hilarious.
