Another day, another attempt by conservatives to undermine the on-going FBI investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign and whether or not it colluded with Russia during the 2016 election.
This time it was based on a report from The Hill’s John Solomon — a favorite of Fox News’ Sean Hannity — which alleged that former Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, the same diplomat George Papadopoulos drunkenly spoke to about Russia and “damaging info” they had on Clinton, paid the Clinton Foundation $25 million.
Naturally, this led to people like Hannity and Rep. Devin Nunes pushing this story as some “massive scandal” implying that this diplomat is a pro-Clinton stooge, to further their narrative that the FBI’s investigation into Trump is nothing but a “witch hunt.”
While it’s true that Downer was part of a $25 million payment to the Clinton Foundation, that money actually came in the form of an official payment from the Australian government, not Downer himself, as part of the country’s initiative to combat AIDS. The payment, which was made over a decade ago, by the way, was presented by Downer because, at that time, he was Australia’s foreign minister.
It’s also important to point out that Downer is actually a conservative, which means it’s rather ridiculous to claim he’d be some sort of “pro-Clinton lackey.”
Then again, the people who are pushing this nonsense are also many of the same people who want Americans to believe that the FBI’s investigation is all some “deep state witch hunt against Trump” despite the fact that:
- The FBI is currently being run by Trump’s hand-picked director Christopher Wray.
- Special counselor Robert Mueller is a Republican and was appointed by Trump’s own deputy attorney general — also a Republican.
- Former FBI director James Comey is a Republican.
- The Department of Justice is currently being run by Trump’s own Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
Oh, and the on-going Congressional investigations into to Russia’s cyber attack against the 2016 election are also being led by Republicans since they control majorities in both the House and the Senate.
This just goes to show you how desperate conservatives are to do whatever they can to undermine the credibility of the investigation into whether or not Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia. The fact that they’re trying to spin a payment from the Australian government from over a decade ago to the Clinton Foundation as part of the country’s effort to combat AIDS into some massive scandal to undermine this investigation is stomach-churning, but par for the course coming from the conservative media and corrupt Republican party.
