While they only have themselves to blame, the Republican party is in a whole lot of trouble right now. After all the years of fear-mongering, hate-filled rhetoric and propaganda, it’s all finally collapsing upon them. The truth of the matter is the only reason Donald Trump is their current (and overwhelming) presidential frontrunner is because the GOP and the right-wing media created the perfect environment for such a candidate to rise to that position.
Now many of them are coming to a harsh reality check: There’s nothing they can really do about it. Trump has called most Mexican immigrants rapists, he’s insulted a war veteran and gotten into a very sexist back and forth with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly – yet his numbers continue to climb.
A newly released poll from Morning Consult now shows Trump’s lead over the rest of the Republican field has climbed seven points following the first debate where Fox News was clearly trying to target the real estate mogul with the hopes of killing some of his momentum.
I think this has all reached a point where the only thing that can stop Trump is Trump himself – which is still very likely to happen. If I were advising Republicans, I would simply tell them to just focus on themselves and their campaigns and let Trump eventually self-implode. As much as I’m thoroughly enjoying seeing Trump wreak havoc within the Republican party, I know it’s just a matter of time before he pushes things too far.
But even with Trump’s likely self-sabotage coming sometime in the future, that doesn’t negate what his surge in popularity has exposed about the Republican party.
What does it say about a good chunk of the Republican party when Donald Trump could ever be your presidential frontrunner? That in and of itself is just flat-out embarrassing. Then when you factor in the things he’s said and done to become that front-runner – it’s just sad and pathetic.
It was one thing when he bashed Mexican immigrants; I’m not sure if anyone was really all that surprised to see his numbers climb following those comments, as sad as that is to say. But since then he’s mocked John McCain’s war record and made several disparaging and sexist remarks about women. Hell, he even called Megyn Kelly a “bimbo” following the debate on Thursday to go along with his “blood from wherever” comment that most everyone has heard about by now.
Yet, despite all of that – and despite many claiming he “lost” the debate – this poll shows that he actually managed to increase his lead over his rivals.
While this is only one poll, it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see more showing Trump with a widening lead or holding his ground. I think this solidifies my belief that the only person who can “take down Trump” – is Trump. There’s really nothing these other candidates can say or do that’s going to make any difference to those conservatives who are supporting him. And while I think Trump will eventually implode, Republicans will forever have to live with the reality that for a decent amount of time, Donald Trump was their party’s overwhelming frontrunner for their presidential nomination.
