Let Me Address Ted Cruz’s Reprehensible and Disgusting Response to Brussels Attack

For months I’ve been telling people that they need to be careful what they wish for when they root for the downfall of Donald Trump because the candidate who’s likely to take his place, Sen. Ted Cruz, is much worse. Don’t get me wrong, both men would be an absolute disaster for this country as president, but I’ll take an arrogant blowhard egomaniac over an arrogant, sociopathic religious fanatic any day.

And don’t kid yourself, Cruz agrees with most of what Trump says. In fact, I’ve even in a roundabout way sort of defended Trump because he’s been asked to answer for almost all of his questionable endorsements. Meanwhile, Cruz defended an endorsement from a pastor who called Adolf Hitler a “hunter” sent by god to kill Jews – and almost nobody heard about that.

All that being said, Ted Cruz’s response to the recent terrorist attacks in Brussels was appalling.

Here’s what Cruz posted on Facebook:

We need to immediately halt the flow of refugees from countries with a significant al Qaeda or ISIS presence.

We need to empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.

We need to secure the southern border to prevent terrorist infiltration.

And we need to execute a coherent campaign to utterly destroy ISIS.

The days of the United States voluntarily surrendering to the enemy to show how progressive and enlightened we can be are at an end. Our country is at stake.

He literally used this tragedy to spout off talking points. What the hell does this attack have to do with our southern border? Does this fool really think terrorists are coming up through our southern border? Are people really this ignorant? Who am I kidding, they’re Republicans – of course they’re that ignorant.

Not only that, but it’s ridiculous he feels he can “utterly destroy ISIS.”

Here’s a fact: You will never get rid of terrorism

Can you weaken terror groups? Of course. But in this modern-day and age of terrorism, the unfortunate reality is that we can’t prevent all of these attacks. When all it takes is two people with a couple of guns to kill fourteen people in California, how do you stop that? Especially when Republicans are protecting a suspected terrorist’s right to bear arms.

In today’s world, terrorism is a lot like a computer virus. Sure, you can take all the precautions in the world to get rid of nearly all of them. But eventually someone, somewhere is going to find a weakness, a flaw or a hole in security and exploit it. I know that’s not a popular thing to say, but it’s the truth.

Though the most offensive thing Cruz said was his suggestion that we should secure and patrol Muslim neighborhoods before they “become radicalized.” This from the guy who likes to champion himself a “Constitutional conservative.”

What an absolute hypocrite.

He’s essentially advocating for some form of martial law when it comes to dealing with Muslim neighborhoods. Meanwhile, how the hell do you identify a “Muslim neighborhood”? I once lived in an apartment complex just north of Dallas that had a large Muslim population living in it. Would that qualify? Exactly what percentage of a neighborhood has to be Muslim to be considered a “Muslim neighborhood”?

While I have no way to prove it, I almost feel as if Cruz probably smiled a little bit (at least on the inside) when he heard the news of this recent terrorist attack. This was a moment for him to seize and politicize a tragedy to push the same bullshit talking points he’s been blithering on about for years.

So, while I’m sure most of us are completely sick and tired of hearing about Donald Trump, everyone rooting for his downfall really needs to think that through. Because if Trump doesn’t win the nomination, Ted Cruz likely will. And as I’ve said before, while Donald Trump would embarrass me as president – Ted Cruz absolutely terrifies me.
