While we know a good deal of information concerning Donald Trump, his campaign, and the rather extensive list of connections he has to Russia, I get the feeling we haven’t even scratched the surface when it comes to this scandal. I can’t shake this feeling that one day I’m going to see breaking news where Trump’s either resigning from office or being impeached.
One of the controversial bits of information we don’t know relates to Trump’s continued refusal to release his tax returns. Documents many feel may contain evidence that could potentially prove Russia is using financial leverage as blackmail to compromise Trump. This was one of the main allegations in the infamous Steele dossier — among other things.
The controversy surrounding Trump’s tax returns isn’t just that he’s the first “Commander-in-Chief” to not release his taxes in the last 40 years, it’s that he’s continually lied about why he’s yet to release them. He’s also downplayed calls to release his tax returns as something most people don’t care about, despite polls showing that the overwhelming majority of Americans believe that he should.
It’s clear to most rational people that Trump has no plans to ever release his tax returns unless he’s forced to.
Well, if Senator Lindsey Graham gets his way, he might be forced to release those documents soon. It seems the Republican senator from South Carolina is pushing for an investigation into Trump’s business dealings, presumably to find out what, if any, ties he may have to Russia.
I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan of Graham’s, but I’ll at least give him credit for being one of the few Republicans who’s been vocal about his concerns relating to Trump’s possible ties to Russia. In particular, potential collusion with Russian agents during last year’s election.
I think it goes without saying if there is an investigation opened into Trump’s business dealings, that would almost certainly require his tax returns to be turned over to investigators. This is obviously something Trump doesn’t want to see happen.
While some have dismissed this as partisan politics, Trump’s continued refusal to do what every other presidential candidate for the last 40+ years has done is a big deal. Especially when you factor in not only has he lied about why he hasn’t released these documents, but he’s also tried to discredit polls that show the majority of Americans think he should release his tax returns.
How this ultimately ends is anybody’s guess. It’s not a good sign for Donald Trump that a fairly prominent member from his own party is now calling for his business dealings to be investigated over concerns that he may have financial ties to Russia which Vladimir Putin could be using to compromise him as this nation’s leader.
