Marco Rubio Says Forget the Dead Lion, Focus on Aborted Fetuses Instead

rubio1Anyone who knows me personally knows that I’m a huge animal person. While I’m not some radical like those fools over at PETA, or someone who thinks animals should have the same rights as humans, I do fully believe that anyone who abuses animals is a sick individual.

Even hunting is a gray area for me. While I’m fine with hunters who eat what they kill, I do have a problem with those who “kill for sport.” It’s just never been a phrase that sat right with me. I can’t comprehend how people can get legitimate joy from killing something. I’ve often seen animals – even those in the wild – show fear, love and friendship toward other animals and even people. While they’re not humans, that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy life or have emotions. Anyone who has pets knows firsthand that animals have very strong emotions. Heck, my dogs go bananas when I come home from being gone. They’re like extremely excited children on Christmas morning – who drank 10 cans of Mountain Dew followed by a pack of Red Bull.

So, when I read about the killing of Cecil the Lion, I was furious. Now I’m not saying I place an animal’s life above a human, but to lure an animal out of a sanctuary meant to protect him from being hunted and slaughtered just to kill him is perverse. Not only that, but it wasn’t as if his death was quick. First he was apparently shot with an arrow, which only wounded him. It’s then believed that the hunting party then spent two days (while Cecil was wounded and suffering) tracking the animal, before finally shooting him with a rifle.

Oh, and then they beheaded and skinned him.

Naturally, a lot of people were irate when hearing of this news – and rightfully so. It seems I’m not the only one who believes that killing for pleasure is fairly sick.

However, Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio isn’t among those overly concerned with the brutal killing of a beloved lion. He took to Twitter to express his belief that people should stop worrying about a lion and instead focus on fetuses:

Classy Rubio, real classy.

First, the Planned Parenthood thing is mostly right-wing fabricated nonsense. It’s already been well established that the video Republicans keep harping on about was heavily edited. Though, I will admit that the rather candid way in which the Planned Parenthood representatives discuss these issues isn’t exactly ideal. I’m pro-choice, but I’m not exactly pro-abortion. I believe a woman has the right to choose for herself, but that doesn’t mean I’m a cheerleader for abortion.

However, Rubio’s tweet display an even greater ignorance. It’s the inability for Republicans to simply accept the fact that abortion is legal and protected by our Constitution. Even if you want to take the Planned Parenthood videos for what these conservative groups claim it represents, it doesn’t change the fact that they’re talking about fetuses from women who exercised their Constitutionally protected right.

Yet, instead of just keeping his mouth shut about the issue (which is what he should have done in this instance) he had to try to exploit and politicize the anger many felt over the brutal death of an innocent animal to try to make some asinine point about abortion.

That being said, I would encourage everyone to contact Sen. Rubio and let him know what you think about the disgusting slaughter of Cecil the Lion. Might I also suggest you voice your support for Planned Parenthood as well.

Trust me, he’ll love it.
