As most people have probably heard by now, the U.S., several of our allies and the Iranian government agreed upon a historic deal pertaining to Iran’s nuclear program. It’s a deal many experts are hailing as groundbreaking and some have even suggested that, if successful, could prevent a third world war down the line.
Now, clearly, any sort of talk like that is extremely premature as it’s very possible this deal could eventually fail. But it’s like I’ve said before, I would rather try to give diplomacy a chance to succeed rather than send thousands of Americans off to die in a war that could have been avoided.
Well, about a year and a half ago I wrote an article with a headline very similar to this when all of these talks were still basically in their infancy stage. At the time, I mocked Republicans for being outraged that President Obama might dare try to use diplomacy to deal with Iran (some even suggesting he’s betraying his country) when almost every member of the GOP hails Ronald Reagan as a “conservative legend and American icon” – yet he illegally sold arms to Iran.
Sure, Oliver North is the one who ultimately gets tagged with the “blame,” but you have to be an absolute moron to honestly believe that arms were being illegally sold to the Iranian government and the Reagan administration knew nothing about it.
But could you imagine the right-wing freak-out if, instead of simply agreeing to the framework of a deal on Iran’s nuclear program with several of our allies, the Obama administration was caught selling weapons illegally to the Iranian government?
We’ve already seen Republicans commit borderline treason when it came to trying to sabotage these negotiations; if Obama were caught selling Iran weapons, I don’t doubt for a second that we’d be seeing impeachment proceedings underway.
But Reagan was caught selling arms to the Middle Eastern nation during much more hostile relations between the two nations, yet I don’t see many referring to the former president as someone who betrayed his nation or turned his back on Israel, as many on the right have accused President Obama of doing. Hell, they’d probably put Reagan on Mt. Rushmore if they could.
It’s like I’ve often quipped, if President Obama did some of the things Reagan and/or George W. Bush did while they were in office, Republicans would be absolutely losing their minds. Yet to listen to many of them talk about President Obama, you’d think he was one of the most traitorous and deceitful in American history.
The hypocrisy by many on the right simply never ceases to amazes me. We had the “conservative icon” Reagan administration getting caught selling weapons to Iran, and the Bush administration sending nearly 4,500 Americans to die in Iraq based on lies, yet Republicans are trying to act “outraged” over negotiations between the Obama administration and Iran concerning their nuclear program; negotiations that most of our allies support.
I’ve reached a point with Republicans where I don’t know if I should be angry or if I should just laugh, because their absurdity has reached a level where it’s almost impossible for me to take anything they say or do seriously anymore.
