Mayor of South Carolina Town uses Disgusting LGBT Slur when Talking About Gay Marriage

linda-oliverThe party of “Christian values” strikes yet again.  Linda Oliver, the mayor of West Union, South Carolina, recently posted absolutely disgusting remarks about same-sex marriage on her Facebook page.

Oliver posted:

“What’s it gonna take to get these queers to realize they don’t need a piece of paper. God will not bless their union because he plainly speaks against queers in the Bible.  Want to cover your queer with insurance?  Buy a policy.  Want your queer to get your stuff when you die?  Make a will.”

The word “ignorance” doesn’t adequately describe these deplorable remarks.

The post on Facebook has since been deleted, but not before triggering a flood of negative feedback.

First, I like how these religious radicals seem obsessed with same-sex marriage.  I hate to break it to these people, but marriage is not something only “Christians” participate in.  Though I don’t believe people like Ms. Oliver are actually Christians.

To be a Christian one must follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.  Simply reading the Bible and believing in God does not mean someone’s a Christian.

The world is filled with death, starvation, genocide, rape and countless other atrocities—yet these idiots really believe legalizing same-sex marriage is the final straw that’s going to bring about God’s wrath.

For the record, same-sex marriage has been legal in countries like Canada for years and they’re doing just fine.  The United States isn’t a “holy land” of any kind so it’s ridiculous to really believe, as a nation, we would be the primary example where God places the utmost of importance on these kinds of issues.

Who are we?   Well, we’re a nation that was built on genocide and slavery.  Granted, as a nation we’ve done many great and extraordinary things which are examples of why, on many levels, the United States is one of the greatest societies to have ever existed — but it’s laughable to think that God would suddenly bring down some kind of vengeance upon us because we allow same-sex marriages.

Slavery and genocide are apparently acceptable.  Same-sex marriage?  “It’s the end of times!”

And like I’ve said countless times, Jesus Christ never once spoke negatively about homosexuality in the Bible.  You mean to tell me that same-sex marriage is such a big deal that God’s only son didn’t care to bring it up even once?

Now I do know some within the LGBT community who have told me that the word “queer” isn’t something they see as a slur.  But when used in the context Ms. Oliver did, it’s clearly a slur in the worst possible way.

Her comments define stupidity and ignorance.  They exemplify hate and intolerance.

Traits that are direct contradictions to what real Christianity is about.

But let’s just make a rule.  If God is real, as Christians believe, why don’t we start letting God determine right or wrong and just mind our own business?  Because at the end of the day, as Jesus did say, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.”  Meaning, unless we are free of sin ourselves, we shouldn’t be judging others.

Because I really doubt Ms. Oliver is infallible.  So, maybe she just might want to keep her ignorant comments to herself and worry more about what God might think of what she’s done in her life, instead of spewing negative thoughts about the lives of others.

“God don’t love ugliness,” as was once said in a movie. If there IS a god, I can’t imagine he is thrilled about all the ugly, mean, and generally rotten sentiments uttered in his name.

  • fairness_rules

A person living a “Christian” life, ie: living like Jesus Christ as much as possible, will follow his teachings. In part, that means to love everyone, including those that are different from you and even your enemies. We may not like or support a different lifestyle but we are to love everyone. Also, we are not to judge another person as that is Gods job. The lady this post is about is not demonstrating any kind of love for the people she castigates. This is not how a Christian acts! She is wrong and certainly is not an example that anyone should follow.

  • bolivia1

What a dumb bitch. She needs lessons on how things are this day. Who would elect this bitch to office. She should be in a nursing home, away from the populace. Oh, that’s North Carolina!

    • Emily Miller

theres only 300 people in the whole town. she either a relative or inbred of the whole town who elected her.

  • tiredoldman

what is it,we now can’t say anything against queers and freaks without getting everyone upset. It a free America and everyone has a right to their to own opinion, whether queers like it or not.

    • Genie Christie Long

Yes. Everyone has a right to their own opinion And my opinion is that this woman is a hopeless bigot who disgraces the name of Christianity. talk some more. I’m developing an opinion about you.

      • Emily Miller

        she is a tea banger

    • Tony

Free America or not, no publicly elected official should get away with demonizing a group of people out of their own ignorance, prejudice and fear. And by the way, free speech does not mean you’re absolved from all consequence. You can’t go up to a woman and tell her that her breasts are big without getting slapped in the face. Accept the consequences for what you say.

    • gemma liar

yep– that includes me ranting about small dicked shitbag religious trash who are stoooopid enough2 give their money to a TAX free “church to convince themselves that they are going to “heaven” which is—in THEIR lizardshit brain- has only “Christians”. There are rednecks everywhere, not just in the south.

Too be fair the Christian god did nuke a gay city once. It’s clearly not a fan of cupcake and candle shops.

I have many LGBT friends whom I care about deeply and I am also a born-again Christian. My heart hurts when my friends are hurt by words; it hurts my heart when people judge other people in the name of Christianity. What was said in this article that made me come off my couch in support is the comment letting God call those he wishes to call. Many are called, few are chosen. That is between the individual and the creator. Christians should live their life as an example of what caring people represent, patient, kind, without envy, with character, principle, forgiveness, and a servant’s nature. I have gay friends that are really nice to me and probably would play if that was my thing. As Melvin Udall said in “As Good As It Gets:” “Buddy, I would be the luckiest guy in the world if that did it for me.” The hugely fundamental wrong is that there is an assumption of sexual activity. How does one know what goes on behind closed doors? Is it any business of anyone else? I know platonic gays that have lived together for years. They work, pay their bills, love each other, have wonderful senses of humor, and sacrifice to spend time with you when you hurt. I chose not to proselytize – rather the message of kindness speak volumes. Our response should be one of understanding that it is the hateful who are misinformed.

  • Mark

I thought Christians were happy people but looking at this woman, it does not look that way. Therefore one can conclude she is not a Christian. Then why pretend. There are a hell of a lot of pretend Christians around that give Christianity a bad name. Not all Christians are bad but these types are pathetic. Who does she think she is – God? She is just a Mayor and maybe bad at her job too. She is filled with such vile hatred and who gave her that right?

Hmmm… Bolivia1, way to go you just stooped to the same level! Slur for slur, eye for eye. And then like a little Middle School, high school, or prison punk you say “she needs lessons on how things are this day”. Lesson number one, fundamental things do not change just because peoples perception of them does, the laws of gravity work the same today as the did yesterday and as they will tomorrow, the laws of the equal right of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness are the same today, as they were yesterday and as they will be tomorrow. People do not break the law, this is impossible, at best we break ourselves against the law, which now both you and her have done. That’s my free lesson for you, granted you may be incapable of understanding.

Typical southern hillbilly. Dumb as dirt and living in fear of some redneck church, not realizing that the world is larger than her crappy little trailer park of a town. Can’t even see past the state line. Elected by like-minded mouth breathers. I vote yes for secession. Chop off the South and see them scramble to try and exist without the blue states they claim to hate so much!

    • Tony

So long as there is a place for liberals to go in the mass exodus soon to come when the south secedes.

      • Carl Smith

Oh I think liberals are pretty good fighters, they’re not going to leave.

      • KatieDancer

Please rewrite this sentence in Amerikun.

    • Dan

Careful, you are doing the same, making a all encompassing statement about a Group of people that you know nothing about
All people that live in the south are not dumb hillbillies, some are more liberal than you claim

      • Tony

I have family in Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi, and from what I’ve seen and heard she’s not that far off. These are some of the most ignorant people in the US unfortunately. Yeah there will be liberal people no matter where you live in this country, but stereotypically we’re all defined by our demographics. I’m not saying it’s right, but that’s the world we live in.

      • suburbancuurmudgeon

Yeah, but there are enough of them that they make the rest of our lives miserable. Any Southern liberals are welcome up north with open arms.

      • Guest

He didn’t say “typical southerner”, he said “typical southern hillbilly”. But since the marriage ban in S. C. won by 78%, I have to believe she IS typical. Gross, ignorant…and typical. Sorry mate, if you are not one of that group, but that makes you untypical, and good for you.

I’m glad you’ve grown past that but there it is: 78% of South Carolina voted to keep gay people as insecure, unhappy, and unequal as they can

      • Emily Miller

how do you know that maybe votes were cast aside like in texas?

      • juliejuliejulie

Dan, I grew up in Florida and Georgia ( from ages 10 to 42) and left for a reason. I earned the right to post that because I lived it. You’re correct that there are some moderates and liberals there but not many. We chose to move to Seattle to give our kids a better world view, free from racism (and don’t try and deny it’s common in the South!) and bigotry. It was the best decision we ever made.

      • Good for you!

Seattle is so lovely. I used to live there, I was born there, in fact. I live nearby-ish now, but I still visit frequently.

    • Carron Stone

okay so i am a southern queer reproductive justice activist. lets remember all the not southern states where gay marriage is still not legal? there are there non ignorant mouth breathers everywhere, and if not, you sound a lot like them wherever you live.

    • Basil Alameda Soper

there are many queer identified and gay and lesbian and trans* folks who live in the south and want to stay in the south and deserve legal protections.

“God will not bless their union because he plainly speaks against queers in the Bible.”

Not exactly true. The word that Paul uses in the New Testament (google is your friend) is found no where else in Greek literature of the time. People believe it means “court prostitute” but it’s a word he made up. So at best you can say that Paul in the NT says that the prostitution of young males is very bad.

And there is a fair amount of evidence that Jesus was gay. Not conclusive but there is some indication.

    • Tony

There are even suggestions that Paul himself may have been gay as well.

      • jchastn

Paul was a opportunist. He started as Saul the Exterminator of Christians, then when he sensed that Christianity was the hot new thing, he flipped. Many scholars don’t think that his words should even be included in the New Testament.

    • Jerry Straut

There are four Gospels that are the words of Jesus Christ: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The Gospel according to Paul is not one of them. Paul never met Christ, so he cannot speak for Christ. I am not a practicing Christian, but I try to live a Christ-like life. The old testament is a whole lot of ‘Thou shall nots…and Smiting. I ignore it. The other Gospels were written well after Christ’s life and were written by dogmatists and have the imprimatur of the organized, institutionalized Church. It would be like the current House of Representatives writing a Gospel–too much politics and power and not enough love.

      • gemma liar

jerry is correct,,,,PAUL is a living beatle

    • Carl Smith

I don’t give a damn if her sky elf blesses my union. That isn’t even the issue, stupid broad.

    • gemma liar

how about ” F*CK all religions”???? all they ever do is add to misery – as a whole- throughout mans history. GOD id spirituality: GOD is NOT religion

    • jchastn

I agree with you about Paul. He made up lots of stuff, and his vision on the road to Damascus doesn’t (in my mind) qualify him as an apostle. There is lots of evidence that many of his epistles were written by others, later in history, and were political additions to the NT. His words are the ONLY negative statements about gays and lesbians in the NT, and the negatives in the OT are all in blue law chapters that almost nobody follows in the modern world.

THAT SAID, NONE of any of this means ANYTHING in regards to the law of the United States or that of any states therein. This nation can not make laws based on anyone’s bible or Koran or Torah or any other religious writing. What Paul says about gays is irrelevant to the law.

  • Sarah Belawski

I find it problematic that the headline says “disgusting LGBT slur”
I self identify as queer and it irks me when other members of the community try to tell me what words I should and should not use to describe myself. In fact, some establishments recognize this well enough to put the “Q” in the acronym.
Perhaps changing the way this is framed to say something like “elected official repeatedly uses ‘queer’ as a derogatory term” instead of implying that the term itself is the problem.
    .

    • gemma liar

im gay and queer,,,,but I am NOT homosexual- that being said I KNOW that all people who try to live good lives deserve the “pursuit of happiness”

    • Basil Alameda Soper

      YES! thank you!

    • jchastn

Sarah, I don’t think that anyone is telling YOU what words to use, but coming from the mouth of an obvious hateful bigot, “queer” is a pejorative. African Americans sometimes use the “n word” among each other. But it is not appropriate for me to use that word. I am pretty sure that this “christian” mayor meant the word “queer” as a slur.

  • Analog Kid

Look at her. Clearly a lesbian. The people most outspoken against gays are often gay themselves. Proves itself time and time again.

    • Carl Smith

      yup.

    • Basil Alameda Soper

no. making an assumption like this is just as bad as assuming all people are cisgender. or because a man is feminine they are automatically gay. come on! we are more intelligent then that. she’s scared. She’s scared that people going against normativity and societal norms are winning. Her past and growing up and everything she’s ever believed is wrong. So, she is acting out.

      • Analog Kid

Well, she better get used to it.

      • jchastn

We are CHANGING societal norms. She and her vicious “christian” church can’t handle that change, and think that they can write the rulebook. That may have been true in the past, but not anymore. Grow up bitch, or get out.

      • Basil Alameda Soper

I think the gay community has really assimilated into societal norms or else gay marriage wouldnt be so important. it’s the epitomy of a normalized protestant idea.

      • Emily Miller

she probably divorced husband left her for a man

  • John Carter

Interesting story and disgusting in its own right, but isn’t that Rachel Dratch, former SNL cast member in the picture?

  • richard

Once it hits social media the righteous get busy….her little office is overwhelmed with emails and calls, her PO Box is jammed with protest mail, her staff is upset, the town wants to know why she can’t just shut up, Free speech is fine….but be ready for consequences. This is 2013, the world is bigger than a little town in S. Carolina…..

    • Emily Miller

yea really she to move to texas with cruzette

  • KatieDancer

Anyone else think this woman is a repressed lesbian?

    • Emily Miller

yes, fear is driven by desires felt within

  • Roberta

If you call God your Father then you believe you are his child. A Father loves all his children, not just the ones behaving, but especially the ones misbehaving. If you can’t accept that fact you can not call God your Father, or consider yourself His child. As difficult as it is at times to understand hateful behavior of a brother or sister we must set the example of forgiveness.
I’m hoping she will come to understand, and if not..she is the one who must face the Father on her own. He does not need to hear His other children pronouncing what He will do to her.

    • jchastn

I don’t need anyone’s forgiveness. Your God is obviously not real. Quit with the old fairytale books and your life will be happier.

  • gemma liar

she upset because her “marriage” is sans sex: her ‘husband’ wont touch her ( WOULD YOU????) so shes pissed off at those-“gay” and “straight” who are actively enjoying the companionship and sex that a TRUE loving relationship brings. SHE almost looks like a dude in that photo——–I bet she is smoking HOT with no clothes on ( just like glen beck)

    • jchastn

May she choke on her beer and fried weasel vomit.

  • Basil Alameda Soper

“Queer” isn’t a slur always. It’s how I and many others identify. It’s called re-claiming.

    • jchastn

Yes that is true. LGBT persons can use that word. Straights can not. Its like the “n word”.

  • Devil_Dinosaur

I’m grateful to live in the part of history where people like this are phased out and dying off. Their death-rattle is, frankly, entertaining.

  • Jason Steiner

Another case of someone who does not understand the separation of church and state. BTW, since when is ‘queer’ a ‘disgusting LGBT slur’?

  • LT

The Christian god nuked a city of gays. It’s not a fan of gay people.

  • Jason Case

“Disgusting?” Homosexuals have self-identified as “queers” for ages, you moron. They don’t find it offensive, so why would you? It’s painfully obvious you’re a homosexual yourself and are just acting like a butthurt child to sensationalize your headline.

    • jchastn

Like the “N word”, the “Q word” is used to SELF identify, but if it comes out of the mouth of ugly fat bitches who should choke on their beer vomit, or any other bigoted straight hater, it is a pejorative. I can use that word. STRAIGHTS can’t.

  • SherylSimpson

isn’t a will or an insurance policy just a piece of paper, too? and i bet backwood hillbilly ignats like you would put just as much stock in those as you would my marriage license. i love how these wastes of skin try to bring God into their rationale for hate. so. much. ignorance.

  • Paula Payne

Making a will (living will or otherwise) does not stop homophobic family members from contesting it. I work as a nurse and have seen bigoted family members keep partners away from dying loved ones time and again. I hope when her fat ass is inevitably hospitalized with heart disease, she gets a “queer” like me to take care of her. Sometimes I can’t believe this is 2013. Why delete the comments if this is how she feels? I would rather know exactly what I am up against.

  • Roberta

Touchy, are we, JC? I wasn’t addressing YOU! I was making a general comment, like everyone here. Perhaps you should take a good look at your own life before you judge others. You see things you don’t like and call them a fairy tale life. No, my friend..no fairy tales here, just a broader scope of thinking without the cold heart of judging my brothers, and sisters.
Take a good look in the mirror and make sure you don’t.

  • Once again, the hypochristians just don’t get it. And give the actual Christians a bad reputation. We on the Christian Left have to make it known far and wide that we disapprove of people hijacking the name of our Lord for purposes of hatred and bigotry. There are Christians, and there are hypochristians, and we have to help people understand the difference.
